I'm afraid this is fake.
First, for mercury to be in a solid state, it requires it to be very very cold.
Second, when mercury is cold, it shrinks like a dick in an ice tray.
Third, for it to rapidly melt into a puddle, it would have had to have gotten hot very fast.
Fourth, the puddles would have blobbled outward like an Amoeba, and have expanded to cover much more surface area, or shatter into beads.
Sorry but I really had to get that out. I'm a tad obsessed with physics.

It's very easily possible to reach the −38.8°C freezing point. Nature creates temperatures lower than this (Such as antarctica, or even the Russian Winter), it shouldn't be hard to recreate in a lab. And you're right, it would shrink.
Aside from that, everything you said was pretty much correct.

You're right from that perspective but you can also tell it's fake by looking at the description: If I am not mistake it is pretty hard to get your hands on mercury. Furthermore it was made (as the description states) by CollegeHumour which is renowned for making things up like this for entertainment.

yes fake.. but if what you say could be true what could they sliced it with? they would have to use a super sonic blade or anything that is faster than the speed of light and gravity and it would have to be sharp enough to cut it without attracting particles (which i believe would have to be faster and stronger than its surface tension). which in this time of our world i feel is impossible.
but anyway..

For it to have gone from self standing, roll, then blorp into puddles, it would have first had to be in a solid like state. Mercury is, for lack of a better term, a fucked up metal. It melts slowly, acts like a solid liquid, and heavy as the hulks left ass cheek.
For it to have been self standing at a size beyond that of a small pea, it would have had to be cold. When mercury falls, it moves violently and shatters.
Lets say it actually was that size, though. It would not have turned into puddles. It would have split into two smaller beads. It had to be of much larger mass to become puddles.
