What makes it infinite is canter's diagonal, its a theory that suggests that as soon as an infinite set it complete there is another number right after the last. For example, in an infinite set of 1's and 0's as soon as the set is finished, another 1 or 0 comes in to complete it, making it a complete set again, meaning another number (be it a 1 or 0) has to be added to the set, and so its ever expanding. the universe follows an infinite pattern like this, and so the reason it has to keep expanding is to keep itself at an infinite set.

You can't have sets of infinite in a 3 dimensional universe.....
