The universe is infinite in the sense that matter is spreading out, but so very finite in the sense of how much matter there is.

"universe" means all time, space, energy, and matter in existence.

so far, time is believed to be infinite (there's no reason not to think so), and space is getting larger at an accelerating rate. matter and energy are both (most likely) finite.

no, time IS finite, and there's a reason to think so. If the temperature drops to absolute zero, every atom stops and so will time. Time is relevant only to an active system.

The thing is, it is impossible to determine where space ends. If space is just nothingness, then it's infinite. But matter and energy are definitely finite.

space isn't 'nothingness,' but it's also intertwined with time. this complex relation between time and space is what allows for the universe to be infinite
