What ******* asshole tried patenting human genes?
#170 to #30 - anonymous (06/17/2013) [-]
It would have been horrible had they succeeded. We would have to pay them every time we use a diagnostic test for BRCA genes (the ones they tried to patent, breast cancer genes, Angelina Jolie has a mutation in one of them). It's important that there is competition in industry so these tests get cheaper.

idk but i wish that asshole would die. if human genes were patented, science would not
be for the advancement of humankind anymore. it'd be just another ****** capitalistic business

Imagine if you Find a way to remove cancer genes, that person who managed to patent those genes would be the richest ************ in the world.

It's ALL about the money which is pretty sad..... some people are so addicted to money they try to patent human genes.

Surely you can see the other person's side. I'll be more specific:

Imagine if you find a way to remove cancer genes, you are not able to patent this. Someone else with more money than you takes all your work and is able to advertise it so much better than you that it basically ends up with him taking all the credit and making more money than you.

We definitely shouldn't patent genes but the credit and money should definitely go to the person who worked on it. I don't understand how you can think the way you do. How is it sad that it's all about the money? You don't work hard at something for nothing. The world doesn't owe you anything, if you want something then you have to work to pay for it. If it's not money, then it's another reason and honestly, we're lucky that it's about money and not world domination.

there is a good difference between money for something you do and earning millions of dollars which serve no purpose as one can not use it all up before you have earned the same amount of money again.

and If someone with more money than you takes all the credit they also usually have the money to invest and advance the method further.

and you can't understand the way i think ? we are going as far as finding ways to "own" others body just to make as much money as possible, that is the problem... our drive for something which does not have any value in the end is crazy and we even go as far as trying to prohibit medicine to the people because people want waay to much money.

Myriad Genetics was the one that was being the biggest bitch about it. They tried to patent cancer testing genes
#75 to #64 - visdman (06/17/2013) [-]
They managed to get the right to patent artificial genes though.

All that ****** ****** up. Stuff like Monsanto. It's like we're legalizing crimes against humanity.

Problem with patenting human genes is that the copy rights last forever (thanks Disney) and that if you patent human genes you can own people a direct violation of the 13th amendment of the US Constitution.
