King cobras are in fact cobras. The cobra designation is defined by the family Elapidae, and not by a genus, and king cobras are a part of that family.

wrong. the family elapidae has cobras yes, but also kraits, mambas, and coral snakes. the king cobra is in the ophiophagus genus by itself and not in the naja genus which is commonly the cobras.
