The gas inside of the jar is heavier than air. The oxygen in air is needed for materials to combust , and only the gas at the top of the jar is in contact with oxygen so only the gas that is currently at the top can combust. The gas lower down has no oxygen near it until the gas above it is used up so it does not combust.

Alcohol wont burn that fast, but you can try this : Get a big jar with a tight neck, put a spoon of 90% alcoho, and shake it so that the alcohol sticks to the walls of the jar, then open the jar and put a flame there, you'll get a jet engine for about 0.5 seconds.


if the jar is thin it might break...
