What if like two years down the line suddenly the thing turns back on. Scientists are baffled until one makes the horrible realization that it was manually turned back on. And now it is making a rapid approach to earth
User avatar #31 to #4 - armwulf (05/31/2015) [-]
Imagine if someone was able to connect to it without them knowing, and was able to force a reboot- and leave a "Manual Rest Engaged" in the logs to make it look like that's what happened.

its already back online

that would make such a great movie if we saw it from the aliens point of view and they weren't evil, just curious of our solar system
User avatar #42 to #21 - distortedflare ONLINE (05/31/2015) [-]
And the best thing is, is that it could be played from two perspectives. We see Aliens exited and eager to meet this new species. and on earth you have Humans panicking and uniting as one power all there weapons facing towards the incoming threat.

Oh lordy please solar sails.

it didnt fail, its back online actually

but wouldn't the "push" that the light gives be really small...
The only way this could be used for space flight is if it rotated a something that generates electricity that can power some propulsion but even then it wouldn't be very much.

idk I've never even done physics yet in school (other than push thing and thing moves) gotta wait till year 11 till it actually involves proper things

I'm ******* sorry, can I see your PHD? You think just cause you can type on a computer you're better than a real scientist?
#27 to #24 - redcapz (05/31/2015) [-]
huh wha? I must've worded that wrong. (sorry) I've never even done physics yet so I just said what I thought (look at the bottom of the comment idk I've never even done physics yet in school (other than push thing and thing moves) gotta wait till year 11 till it actually involves proper things )
User avatar #34 to #27 - monorail (05/31/2015) [-]
Nah that came across really bad, im sorry man

It's all good

There's negligible resistance to it's movements Space isn't a perfect vacuum but it's as close as you can get without breaking some law of physics , so any momentum it gains is retained almost indefinitely.
And that 'tiny push' is given constantly over the entire sail, making the 'tiny push' a 'slight push' which is bigger and the push is constant, 24/7 never stopping, only ever wavering in intensity.
Over time that builds up until the craft is moving at close to light speed
User avatar #28 to #23 - sirdoofus (05/31/2015) [-]
You know how momentum keeps things moving in space without generally slowing down? That push builds up.
#29 to #28 - redcapz (05/31/2015) [-]
ooooohh I think I get it now... so it would just keep speeding up, right?
User avatar #30 to #29 - qwertyuiqwer (05/31/2015) [-]
its cus of no atmosphere

These little suckers work on a similar concept.
Black surface absorbs light,
White surface reflects it.
So one surface is pushed by the sun
So sit it out in the light, and it spins- slowly at first, but over time, very fast.
See a normal rocket- you can think of it more like a cannon. In a cannon, you have a lot of thrust- then nothing, the projectile is left to cruise under the energy that accumulated.
A rocket is the same way, the engine isn't always on.
But a solar sail is under CONSTANT acceleration. Every second of every day, it is ever so slowly accelerating.
Going faster, and faster, and faster, and faster, and faster.

so the equipment didn't work, so what they ******* made a light sail
#25 - sirdoofus (05/31/2015) [-]
From the title I thought Bill died, but I guess he's still kicking.

guys my friend is actually working on this down a Georgia tech and light sail is back online and functioning properly. Plus this was just a prototype they fully expected these kinds of bugs. Hope this clears some things up
#26 - etrian ONLINE (05/31/2015) [-]
Pretty soon they'll be working on voiture lumiere from gundam.
#22 - threethan (05/31/2015) [-]
why didn't you make a tiny rc with a stick to push the reset button so this **** doesn't happen
User avatar #19 - boomroastd ONLINE (05/31/2015) [-]
Make another one to smash the reset button.
#18 - verycoolcat ONLINE (05/31/2015) [-]
Solar sails are a fantasy.

The amount of 'solar sail' area (size) you'd need would be massive for any practical use.
#17 - woofman (05/31/2015) [-]
Well, I suppose it was a prototype. There were going to be some bugs to work out... but that's probably what the info that was beaming back.

That blows big time.

With the LightSail, what if it went behind a planet, or another large space-faring mass that blocked the light?
#16 to #12 - anon (05/31/2015) [-]
The planet would be closer to the sun and would only temporarily block the light, before orbiting further than the satellite.
User avatar #33 to #12 - armwulf (05/31/2015) [-]
It would have enough momentum to cruise back into the light.
