this kind of thing is what makes evolution seem impalpable. the gif makes it look like animals just transforming into another but that's not the case. to condense the process into a few seconds would involve so much death one can't even begin to imagine.

I get what you're saying, but I have to disagree. I have no trouble seeing this as a (very loosely accurate) condensed example of evolution.
Say, for instance, I'm fond of television, and also interested in how we got from black and white to today's 3D tv's. I go to watch a documentary about it, which shows me some examples and highlights of then and now- I don't have to see which exact perigree of television underwent which exact changes to end up where we are today.
..In my head, that was a sound metaphor, on paper, I'm starting to doubt myself.
Either way, have a good day.
