The sum of the numbers on a die is 21, two die makes 42. Perhaps this is coincidence. Perhaps its fate. But Einstein's biggest problem with quantum mechanics was that he didn't like the idea that "God plays dice with the universe". And maybe, somewhere out there is a mad gambler trying to win back all the good in the world he lost on the craps table, just to show us that "two die is pair'o'dice"

have you seen that theory that (and it doesn't really work but) the answer "42" is based on the fact that the sum of two playing dice adds up to 42, so the answer to life is two die... to die...
(doesn't really work like I said, the correct form is two dice... but whatever, I think it's interesting)

I like to think that the answer is more along the lines of "paradise"... or pair'o'dice.

well even still that's like... "the meaning of life is paradise." it doesn't really make sense, but that's neat, I didn't think of it that way :|

i know another theory:
42 / 7 = 6 = sex. the meaning of life is having sex all the time.
42 - 3 (trinity = father, son, holy spirit = religion) = 39. 3 + 9 = 12. 12 means perfection.

life without god/religion is perfect and you shall have sex all the time

The dolphins will be leaving on 21st December 2012 - the Mayan end of the world - which is exactly 4242 days after Douglas Adams left on 11th May 2001, the day he supposedly died. (Meanwhile, 4242 is 42 times 101, which is the 26th prime number, and 26 is the number of dimensions in Bosonic String Theory, or the number of Sporadic Groups in Abstract Algebra. It's also the number of letters in the alphabet, and the number of cubes in Rubik's Cube.
"so long and thanks for all the fish."

Like myrtille said, you're just wrong. Almost all stars have a life time of more than 100 or so million years, unless it is an EXTREMELY large star. And since we can't see individual stars with the naked eye from galaxies that are a hundred plus million years away, and a supernova takes so long to happen (relative to a human lifetime), it's very unlikely that a star you're looking at has died that recently. Oh, and if you're talking about a average sized star like our sun, then the odds are even more unlikely because they live for billions of years.

Welp, now I feel prepared for my Astronomy final this Thursday. /lecture

God‘s Final Message To His Creation is written in fire in letters thirty feet high on the far side of the Quentulus Quazgar Mountains in the land of Sevorbeupstry on the planet of Preliumtarn, which orbits the star Zarss, which is located in the Grey Binding Fiefdoms of Saxaquine. The long path to the message is lined with souvenir stands at spaced-out intervals.

The final message in Marvin's perspective is: “We apologise for the inconvenience.”

<--however this is now widely regarded as Gods final message.
