Uh... Sorry for this, but what's the reference with the book? I'm from Belgium so I never heard of it. Anyway, I googled it a bit, and I really, really don't get the real reference. The mousething control group is just a regular and common used thing in science? It's not only in the book...?

I haven't read the book in a couple of years, so spare me if I get anything wrong.

>Kid is slow, can't keep up with other children.
>Mother is in denial, father trying to push to put him elsewhere.
>Separated from family
>Years later, participates in study to artificially inject intelligence, or some skit like that.
>Charlie (I hope that's his name), also has a pet/friend mouse - Algernon - who is also part of the study.
>Charlie gets insanely smart, along with meeting various characters, mainly his younger sister, and a drunk artist.
>Charlie begins to question his intelligence.
>Skit goes down
>At a conference, Charlie and Algernon are "on display"
>Lets Algernon free!
>MORE skit goes down.
>Suddenly, Algernon passes away after his intelligence seems to have decayed
>Realizes that it'll probably happen to him
>This whole time, the book is written in Journal entries by Charlie
>End of line/paragraph/last page

>"Please leave some flowers for Algernon

TL;DR

Dumb kid gets turned not dumb, along with pet mouse - Algernon. Later, skit happens, not dumb turns back to dumb, and mouse died.

I hope this helps!

Oh okay, I get the story of the book now. But what I really meant was... The comic doesn't actually refer to the book, does it? It's a common thing to do in science...

Oh, well a lot of the comments are just replying to the title more so than the content. I comic just has mice and a study, which probably reminded OP about the book.
