Pi is an irrational number created by humans as a shortcut to understanding circles. It actually doesn't exist except in the minds of humans.
User avatar #233 to #175 - anonymoose (04/03/2013) [-]
It exists as a ratio. The decimal system we use of calling it 3.14159... doesn't physically exist, but that's true of all numbers.

Because of your profile picture I got the image of an arrogant pony saying that. Especially because of the "humans" parts.
#179 to #175 - aiicii (04/03/2013) [-]
as you said, its about circles. even without humans circles, pi and math would be true

Humans created math, 1+1 could equal fish if the humans made it that way

What if Fairies controlled the universe, Mr Crocker?
User avatar #211 to #208 - eiaisqzbsesb ONLINE (04/03/2013) [-]
Nah, more like 1-2.
Attach the fishing rod-shaped 1 to the hook shaped 2 using the stringlike -, and wiola, you get fish.

Pi wouldn't exist without circles. you said " even without humans circles, pi and math would be true" Not only is that grammatically incorrect and confusing, but it is also false. Pi only exists because we allow it to. The reasons that everything can be found in it is because it is not rational.
#182 to #181 - aiicii (04/03/2013) [-]
alright. if there was no universe one plus one would still equal two
User avatar #185 to #182 - emurater (04/03/2013) [-]
No it would certainly not. If there were no universe A, which is what we call our universe, than the very concept of one plus one would not exist. Yes math would still be prevalent and exist in a different plane of existence paralleled to our own, but our logic and reasoning would not have ever existed. If humanity did not exist then the number system we created would also not exist. Therefore our math system never existed in the frist place. Now what if there were some alien race? An alien race would not use the same numbers we do. For all we know their method of what we refer to as "counting" could be something completely different or even far beyond our comprehension. Your statement is not only false but has no logical sense behind it. Before you comment or argue with somebody know your facts or you will only make a fool of yourself.

im bored. math is not dependent on the humanity or aliens

Next time you wish to challenge somebody make sure you can back yourself up. Now if you will excuse me I have to get some sleep, and yes it is. I could go into an hour long discussion about how we created the concept of math, and how another life form may view this concept entirely different, and how we created a number system. I could talk about this for hours. But i need to sleep. It is 6:10 am and you obviously have NO idea what you are talking about. Also you claim to be bored? That's glorious for you, but reading your ignorance is burning my eyes. Goodnight.
#235 to #188 - ipmules (04/03/2013) [-]
woah woah woah. Let's all unbunch our panties. You're both right, since your topic of discussion is not math itself, but philosophy of mathematics. There are various views as to the exact nature and source of mathematics, and it is frequently discussed among mathematicians, and even great mathematicians frequently disagree.

you are so superior to me. im sorry to ever challenge you or lift my head above your knees. id wish you good night but im obviously not worthy
User avatar #197 to #189 - eiaisqzbsesb ONLINE (04/03/2013) [-]
I dont think he/she ever implied that they are superior to you, they just wanted to inform you of how humans created the concept of mathemathics and numbers. If no living creatures existed, no numbers could have existed either. Sure, the concept of time ticking on would still exist, but there would be no numbers to measure it. Placing two single apples next to eachother would make it a pair, but there would be no name for it, or a special mark.
Math was created to simplify the explanation of functions of the universe, but even without math, everything which wasn't created by HUMANS or other sentient life-forms using a mathemathics, would still function. A circle would still be a circle, but there would be no possible way of explaining how the circle is a circle.
#205 to #197 - aiicii (04/03/2013) [-]
yeah, there is this thing called sarcasm in our universe which coincidentally does exist. math is not created by humans. numbers and the way we draw = or + or / are, but math is not
User avatar #209 to #205 - eiaisqzbsesb ONLINE (04/03/2013) [-]
I fully realize you were sarcastic, which implied that you felt emurater was acting superior to you. Otherwise, I would have just assumed you gave up, instead you lowered youself to petty insults.
Also, you are starting to 'sound' like a broken record.
If you had actualy taken the time to read my reply, you wouldn't have repeated yourself, and instead would have come with an actual arguement, but as of now I find no reason to add any more, you're only saying the same thing both I and emurater have argued against. Heck, I even gave a few examples.
#213 to #209 - aiicii (04/03/2013) [-]
i have not wanted to make any other point, thats why i havent said anything but that. i guess i thought you expected a reply, but if you dont thats a different issue and im fine with that. btw, i too did give examples
User avatar #220 to #213 - eiaisqzbsesb ONLINE (04/03/2013) [-]
Look, neither of us have the time to go on and on about this, and I'm sure that in this arguement, all sides have a point, but please, learn to argue, it will do you no good jumping into big arguements with no knowledge of how to do so and without basis to your claims. It will only make people missunderstand your point and make everyone disagree with you.
I'm not saying I agree with your point, I just have a dog whining and barking for a walk and want to settle this as fast as possible.
You seem impossible to convince, and with your arguements, you will never convince anyone to join your views, so I just leave you with the above stated advice.
