During WWI there was a Christmas cease fire, and during that time soldiers from both sides met up and actually made friends with each other. Talked, ate, played soccer (football, whatever) and other games.

When the cease fire ended the fighting resumed.
They shot at the men that just made friends with.

Reminds me of this short comic strip I read where there was a WWI Captain in the trenches.

He saw a soldier of his troop holding a rather full bag in his hand, walking down his way. Suspecting him to be stealing food, the Captain walked up to the soldier, and demanded what to know what was in the bag.

The Soldier replied: "It's my friend, Sir."

In most wars, the men who do the fighting bear little or no animosity towards their enemy, who is usually drafted or just needed a job. Just like themselves. As a Marine, I bear no animosity towards most soldiers of the world that I may be sent to kill at any moment. A notable exception is the recent war in Iraq and the ongoing war in Afghanistan becasue the fighters of both sides are people who volunteered. They fight their religious war and most of us just want to kill people. I harbor a lot of hatred for the Taliban after spending eight months fighting them.

this is WW2 you can tell cause the German does not have the tell tale helmet spike of WWI

Stormmstruppen helmets such as that appeared as early as 1913 in service with elite German forces - as their names say so - Storm troopers. The helmet was effective enough that it remained in service up to WW2, and it's design would later be incorporated in to US Army helmets. There was also no armistice between Allied and Axis forces during WW2. This is a picture from the Christmas armistice of 1914.

I don't get how this is a feel. The prisoner is lighting the captors cigarette, the brits might as well have said ''Light it, or i'll shoot you''.

Just putting it in a different perspective.

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mould a new reality
Closer to the Heart
