Why you'd need a shotgun for burglars and home invasion when you can use an handgun? Why you'd need any weapon for putting food on the table when you can buy it at a supermarket? Why you'd need the last one unless you are paranoid and/or retarded?

Not everyone wants to rely on supermarkets. I do, but I respect people who can provide for themselves.

good thing you have those guns to fight back against the government otherwise they might do something awful like imprison and torture people without trial, or undergo massive surveillance on it's citizens without permission. thank goodness you have that well regulated militia to preserve the security of a free nation the your constitution talks about.

Gotta say though, its pretty great being able to walk down the street and not have to worry about someone going on a shooting spree.

despite repeated studies that have found that guns don't actually make countries safer

We live in a free world; the question should not be "why do we need that"

why do you need movies?
why do you need games?
why do you need a giant fist shaped dildo?

The question should be "why should i not have that? Give me solid reasons"
and: "you could hurt somebody with it" is not a solid reason, you could hurt somebody with nearly anything.

Look, I don't have a problem with handguns and hunting rifles in the hands of sane, non criminal individuals (You can't vote if you're a felon, but guns? Go nuts)

But other then killing a lot of people, what POSSIBLE need do you have for an automatic rifle?

All that guns have done for me:

1) My sister was shot at by her father while he was drunk.
2) My friend's sister held us at gun-point, locked in a closet, to show off to her friends, with her brother's hunting rifle.
3) My cousin accidentally shot his best friend playing with his father's handgun, which was kept in a gun safe but the kid figured out the code because he's not an idiot.
4) I was involved in an attempted armed mugging before my assailant realized I had a pit bull with me who was very displeased with the situation. I do not know why he backed down, and I do not care to question my good fortune.

All I have learned from guns is that they are a threat in the wrong hands, and that the wrong hands are everywhere.

...And to always have plenty of pit bulls if you're a shrimpy little girl living in the city, since apparently they're way more useful than guns (I lived in a terrible neighborhood for a long time, and while my neighbors were broken into constantly, for some reason no one wanted to bust into the house with the sweet, giant pibbles with the very big teeth).

I don't mean to belittle those experiences in anyway, and I'm glad you seem to have made out out safely (hopefully the others involved recovered), but the guns themselves don't present the problem. It has more to do with the way society portrays guns. With so many movies, tv shows, and video games (not that I promote censoring them) portraying guns to kids as cool toys or badges of honor and to adults as either weapons of atrocities or right of ways to power, guns just get lumped in with stereotypical beliefs. The kids want to show them off to their friends and the parents are either to sacred or ignorant to actually teach the kids (after an appropriate age) the true methods to safely handle weaponry and the consequences it can have. Then, to top it off, paranoid flakes get guns to "protect" themselves from everything that makes them jump, which just spreads the fear to others and more problems arise. If people were properly educated on the way guns should be used (as tools), and every news anchor to soapbox speaker to stop fear-mongering that guns will either save or kill us all, it wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem. That's just my opinion though, feel free to disagree.

Just my two cents, Having a fully stocked arsenal is nice, but really you could make due with the handguns and the shotgun.

Now for the ********* in the comments:
The fact of the matter is that thousands of crimes each year are stopped by citizens with guns. Even so, guns are only involved in about 8% of all violent crimes in the U.S. The vast majority are committed with knives, bats, pieces of scrap, etc...

However all these gun arguments miss the bigger issue. If we ban guns under the pretense of people being too stupid or unpredictable to handle them, then what else are people too stupid and unpredictable to do? Should we ban cars, knives, alcohol, etc...? If we believe that all people have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, then we must put enough trust in the people to be independent and handle their own affairs. People have to be able to stand up for themselves, and be free to both succeed and make mistakes. If we decide that people are not responsible enough to handle things, then we concede that people cannot be free, and thus we have entered tyranny. And why should we trust the government to make our life decisions for us? The government is made up of normal people just like you and me, there is no divine right of kings, no special knowledge that only a few can posses. In the end it's not about the criminals or the government, its about preserving the right of every individual to be independent and free.

i believe handguns should be a thing for the mentally stable with no criminal record and is over the age of 21 in my country (UK), or at least be able to carry a sword in public. i mean, imagine if that caught on, everyone with a ******* cavalry sword everywhere
