I love my second amendment right. for 2 reasons: I like knowing that i can arm myself against those that could hurt myself or others, and by owning weapons responsibly i can show that you dont need to ban them. people can be responsible enough to take care of them and not hurt anyone. Even if I am just one person.

People CAN be responsible enough to take care of guns and not hurt anyone, and quite a lot of people are responsible gun owners, but the ones who aren't are the reason for gun control. Nobody buys a gun thinking "next month I'll get drunk at a party and shoot somebody" or "a year from now I'll forget to check the chamber on my handgun and I'll accidentally kill my kid". The first one comes up in the news from time to time and the second one just happened like a month ago.

The problem is that every gun owner is responsible and law-abiding until the moment when something happens. I guarantee that a month or a week or a day before that father accidentally shot his son he would have said "Not checking the chamber for rounds? That's a rookie mistake and I would never make it." Then he made it. On July 19 James Holmes was a good example of a responsible, law-abiding gun owner and on July 20 he became a criminal and irresponsible owner. At 12:00 on the 20th he was exercising his right to arm himself against those who could hurt himself or others, and at 12:38 he was one of those you buy guns to protect yourself from.
