This reminds me of an extinct family of ursoidea, hemicyonidae, more commonly known as dog-bears. They were closely related to bears, and supposedly looked a lot like a mix between one and a canid.

I've talked to Lassi Rautiainen. A damn ice guy. I live in Finland and went on a bear safari that Lassi hosted. Sat in a damp cold hut through the night with binoculars as bears stomped about outside. A great ******* night!
