I know it belongs to doctor-who but it give me... so many feels at once.. D:

When they made this particular hero,
they didn' t give him a gun,
they gave him a screwdriver
to fix things.
a ii ii' its a
f F Ill
They didn' t give him a tank
or a warship or an fighter,
they gave him a can box
from which you can can for help.
And they didn' t give him a superpower
or pointy ears or a heat ray,
they gave him an extra heart.
They gave him two hearts.
And that' s an extraordinary thing;
there will never come a time
when we don' t need a hero like
The Doctor.

But there will ALWAYS be a time where we don't need Moffat.

I think we need him, just not as showrunner.

How in the hell is regeneration not a superpower?
User avatar #20 to #16 - angreif (12/30/2013) [-]
also his ability to perceive the strings that tie all of time together, and several lifetimes of knowledge, piled on top of the natural intelligence of his race
User avatar #38 to #20 - jshyu (12/30/2013) [-]
And he also can hear on frequencies that humans can't. Like in one of the Ood episodes, he could hear the song the Ood were singing, whereas Donna couldn't, until he gave her that power and then took it away... so he can do that too

Well, yeah. I guess.

Regeneration IS a superpower. Not to mention having a badass time machine and a screwdriver that can fix basically everything is a bit over-powered.

User avatar #24 to #7 - dragontamers ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
But it doesn't work on wood, that nerfs it quite a bit.
User avatar #74 to #24 - thebestpieever (12/30/2013) [-]
Not enough, and frankly in the new series it is basically his magic wand.
User avatar #87 to #74 - hugsta (12/30/2013) [-]
It happens all the time. In many, many instances of fiction there is some vague power or object that does whatever the plot needs. In dr.who it's the screwdriver. In the flash comics it's the speedforce. In one piece it's haki. For batman it's his utility belt.

The problem isn't how much it can do, it's that it's used too much. The tardis has time travel, the most overpowered plot device ever, and yet they still manage to write the plot without abusing that each episode.

fair enough, find something else you like there's plenty of things in the world to fawn over.
User avatar #60 - thebestpieever (12/30/2013) [-]
So, I'm gonna be THAT guy.
The fact that the Tardis is a police box is 'cause the first episode filmed was "An unearthly child" where the chameleon circuit disguised it as a police box. When it became time for them to build another thing for the Tardis as a disguise they realised their budget wouldn't allow it, so they said " **** it, it's broken" and left it as a police box. Yeah, it works thematically but it was not planned.

Also, they didn't gave him the Sonic Screwdriver when they created him, they gave it to him in season... 6? I believe? Season 6 or 5, but it wasn't there from the inception.

The heart thing, yeah, that was probably intentional.
User avatar #81 to #60 - jasonvgrace (12/30/2013) [-]
I sometimes wonder how important intention of creation is with art or interpretation.
User avatar #98 to #81 - thebestpieever (12/30/2013) [-]
Well, it isn't important with interpretation. It is important if you wanna make an interpretation that makes sense, if I wanted I could interpret Doctor Who as Nazi propaganda (or anything else, really, you just gotta phrase it right) but that is very obviously not the intent and pretending otherwise just to make my obviously wrong interpretation sound accurate is selective blindness.

It doesn't become what I think this is, but rather what I want it to be and how much am I willing to ignore information in order to have it make sense.

User avatar #17 to #15 - TwelveCharlie (12/30/2013) [-]
Although I don't think they've been used in the new series, the TARDIS does have weapons, and one of the recent doctors called it the most powerful warship in the universe. TARDISes are Timelord warships.

he's not immortal, he can still die, and with the resurrection that implies the being is already dead, and he hasn't died yet. well, he kinda did but old him changed that.
User avatar #55 to #54 - lyiat ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
Regeneration is functional immortality. He dies and resurrects into a new form. Imortallity doesn't mean 'cannot die', it means 'eternal life'. It will not age to the point of dying. It can still be killed. Elves, for example, are immortal. We have jellyfish that do the exact same thing as the doctor. In real life. Right now.
User avatar #56 to #55 - redrex ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
you dont get what im trying to say, yes he can regenerate, but i believe only a certain amount of times, and if he gets killed while regenerating, he stays dead. in another episode, he was poisoned and there was no regenerating his way out of that, but somehow he did, but i forget exactly. So yeah, he CAN in fact die if he gets killed while regeneration or apparently poisoned
User avatar #57 to #56 - lyiat ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]

resurrection implies cannot die, doesn't it?
User avatar #63 to #61 - lyiat ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
I didn't say 'unlimited resurrection'. I simply said 'resurrection'. The dragons in Skyrim can do this as well, until a Dragonborn kills them. The same goes for a Lich, unless you destroy it's phylactery. They can resurrect themselves, just like the Doctor can. The fact that there are limits on it are completely irrelevant.
User avatar #65 to #63 - redrex ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
resurrection is coming back to life, the doctor just flat out doesn't die until he runs out of lives
User avatar #66 to #65 - lyiat ONLINE (12/30/2013) [-]
... I'm not even going to. You just used the word lives. That alone demonstrates how wrong your idea is. After his thirteenth regeneration, he will die permanently. Everything else is temporary. If you don't understand that, I don't know how else it can be explained.

If you watch Day of the Doctor, the first thing that John Hurt's 'Doctor' does is ask for a gun.
Which just reinforces the point of him not being the doctor.

So if I become a firefighter and fight fires, then get amnesia and forget that I was a firefighter, that means I actually wasn't one at all?

Or better yet, if I become a doctor and save lives, then lose my memory of being a doctor, by your logic I was never a doctor in the first place.

And by using that logic... Hold on, I'm gonna go on a killing spree and take some memory erasing pills. After I forget I murdered everyone, I'll have never even been a murderer at all!
