The comic is referring to cancer survival rates, not how likely you are to die at an age.

For those that don't get it, Randall Munroe's (the author) wife has cancer. When she was first diagnosed(she was still his fiancee), it lead to many of his comics being about (understandably) cancer survival rates. This is one of them. There are many more.

My father got cancer (he lived) and now I am mortified of getting cancer. I just imagine having it get worse and worse without me even knowing I have it until it's too late. And then I just rot away.

**** I just want it to be cured already. Too many people are being stolen away from us because of cancer.
