This is the stuff videogames don't show. It's what gives games Like Call Of Duty a bad name. This is true with action war movies too. They make war look fun.

Movies have tried harder to explain what PTSD would be like for a soldier in war lately. The problem is that we're only watching someone else. Videogames, I think, do have the ability to show us what real trauma on the human mind can do in war. We just need to pull away from the run-and-gun of the current shooting games, and look for something more artistic.

Spec Ops the line, nice. Also, Jarhead. Damn fine game, and damn fine movie.

"The Line" shows pretty good how war makes you insane. The main even has to decide whether to sacrifice his friend to get advance or not.

I'ts a german game btw.

The truth is Walker, you're here because you wanted to feel like something you're not: a hero

Then you should make it so you manage ammo in magazines, not fucking ammo pool where you reload exactly how many rounds you shot. That shit annoys me.

Have you played gears of war?

I want to create a war game, where your character has a sanity meter. The more violence is shown, the lower the sanity meter goes. So, it's not only about getting to the objective, it's also about staying sane.

It won't become popular because while some people might enjoy it the majority of the players will be like "wtf is this?" then toss it aside and go on and play some other shooter. Somewhat like amnesia while their are players who enjoy the entire trying to stay sane hide from monsters route there are also people who would rather just try to harm it and face it head on.

I really don't give a fuck, man. All that money is going to go to charity.

So kinda like Amnesia: The Dark Descent but slightly more horrific?

Pretty much, but you need to complete tasks, and your vision is obscured by images of dead soldiers and such.
User avatar #165 to #150 - ruinsage (03/03/2013) [-]
you should make it a hidden insanity meter, and not advertise it. Let people be surprised that they actually go insane when they watch people get murdered in brutal ways.

Maybe when your sanity bar depletes, you begin to see horrible images and you either kill the people around you, or you kill yourself.

if you actually made this game, you should contact war veterans who suffer from PTSD and ask them how it manifested with them. Maybe have a few different things that could happen, and make it so that the game chooses one at random at the start of the game.

I am going to screenshot this thread, print it, and keep it in my room.

Indeed you are, kitty, indeed you are...

Also, I wanted to add something that helps replenish the sanity meter, like when you see a picture of a little girl...10 SP every 5 seconds. A teddy bare 23 every 6 seconds.

don't. Instead of making it another HP bar, show that seeing these horrible things marks you permanently. Instead of letting good things heal you, make it so that good things hold back the insanity, so that if all you see is horror, you go insane quickly, but if you use anti-insanity items (or something), you can hold back the insanity for awhile.

Also, you could make it so that the game doesn't have an ending in the conventional way. Let there be a clean goal in the game, but make it so that you can't possible reach it before you go insane, which ends the game.

I'll call the game. "Judgement Day."

Sounds awesome, good luck

So, it's like Left 4 Dead... Using pills will help you out, but not permanently.
#228 to #179 - broda (03/03/2013) [-]
You could add pills which would help your sanity for some time, but when the effect wears off your sanity becomes even worse
And if you take too much your sanity drops a lot for some time

Sounds like Amnesia. And Metal gear Solid 4.

I think it works better when you DON'T know you're going crazy. It's something subtle that you don't notice as the victim. Maybe something with ending that changes depending on how violent you were or how much shit you had to see. That kind of game is a while away.
User avatar #155 to #154 - screwyouman (03/03/2013) [-]
So, what if... at the end, there's a pleading soldier, begging the main character to let him live. and then the protagonist drops his weapon and notices what he's done. He falls to floor and cries, as the enemy soldier drops his gun and runs away.

Now you're taking about gaming moments. I'm not writing a game here, I'm talking about the aesthetics of games.
User avatar #159 to #157 - screwyouman (03/03/2013) [-]
So, what should I do?
