You know I often wondered how did soldiers of the ancient and medieval world cope with PTSD. I mean today you have therapy, drugs and whatnot, not that it helps all too much but still better than nothing. Wars were just as terrible in those days as they are now (if not worse). Just imagine being a roman soldier on the frontline during the carthaginian wars facing a unit of war elephants. Those huge beasts trampling everything in sight and impaling your brothers in arms on their tusks, blood and death everywhere... I just wonder how did they cope with it afterwards? Were they just more sturdy than the soldiers today so they didn't have such big problems, or was it just something nobody talked about in those days? Gif related

If you screamed in your sleep in the middle of the night back then, they thought you were possessed and they killed you.
They would think you're insane or cursed by some magic most likely.

I don't know much about others... but in Ancient Greece, wars actually had very small amount of casualties between the city states. The reason was that the city states' best and most wealthy/influential citizens were in the front lines. If war actually occurred and people died, well... you'd lose your best people. It was folly. So it usually ended as a giant shoving match with the phalanx and, maybe, a few deaths.

I'm just speculating here but I'd imagine just how instant it is is what makes it so traumatizing. One second you're standing there and the next your friend was completely blown up beside you with nothing but his boots left, and you couldn't see it coming. With gunfire as well, you hear it but you have no idea if/when it's going to happen which makes it all the scarier. At least with older wars you could fight or try to avoid it, and even if you did get injured you saw it coming, but now there's absolutely no way to stop it or anticipate it when it happens; that's what I think the scariest thing would be.

It wasn't like modern wars. Wars were fought for money, and soldiers would get a share of the loot. So they didn't really lose morale like when fighting for your homeland or similar. While elephants could be fearsome, they rarely contacted such types of weapons. Getting a sword trough the chest isn't nearly as fearsome as seeing shrapnels raining all around you. And I'm guessing they didn't know alot of those men they fought with, exactlly for that reason.

Because back then it meant to the people that the others were mocking them and they would fight.

Bloodlust.

And, well... People are becoming more pussified.
