My friend is a waitress AND works in a shoe shop because she doesn't earn enough (whilst being in full time education)

So quit your moaning about tips...

I am guessing OP is American, expecting about 25% of the bill as a tip? ffs..

(posting as anon because I don't want to deal with you Americans that ALWAYS comment about the wage not being enough on its own)

Actually most Americans know that a proper tip is 5% of the total, and what does being American have to do with this?

Isn't the point of a tip that it's voluntary?

I was initially, but now it's become an expected practice (provided you didn't get **** service) and companies will actually pay waitresses/waiters less knowing they'll get tips. It's a stupid system, my employer doesn't give me a little extra when I report back that an engine is running fine, it's part of my job to make sure it is.
