I say that WW I was the last of the "old time" wars. There was something like soldier honor, like actions described in the content, even Russians were fighting the civilized way. I don't say that the war is good, but what happened in the '39 changed everything. In the first time in history we (people) actually felt that we could die. Everyone. Every minute. Bombing of Dresden, concentration camps, nuclear bombs, bombing of Tokyo, western divisions of Red Army sent directly to Siberia to death for seeing the Americans... Even if there still were human parts of this war, they were so clouded by the general bestiality, that it turned into the world's greatest trauma.
And it's history made me sure, that people's minds, despite all the philosophy, all the religious ethics, all the knowledge, haven't changed at all since we came down the trees.

Also, on the last day of WW1, German soldiers were told to fight to the last minute, the last man before the treaty was signed. An hour before the treaty was signed, an American troop raided a German trench. Oddly enough, they weren't being shot at. When they got into the trench, they found all the Germans sitting around smoking and playing cards, and the German machine gunner told the Americans in broken English that they didn't want to kill anymore, that it wasn't worth it.
Also a number of french soldiers who didn't understand what was happening decided to surrender.

To me, this means that we're only fighting because our superiors have told us to
A soldier doesn't know who is on the other side of that gun they're aiming at. So how could they hate them?
The only reason they're fighting is because people who are richer and more important than them, and usually older, told them to.

The German soldiers and ourselves have called a truce for Christmas day. We've exchanged gifts of food and fags. We've even begun a game of futbol with them in no mans land. I've become very well acquainted with one german soldier. We have similar interest's and even have two daughters of the same age. I'm hoping that this will end the war and allow us to return home.

The truce is over and the war has commenced again. Our generals heard of our christmas festivities and have become furious. They have ordered us to re engage the german soldiers. Today we go back through no mans land, but not as friends. We are enemies once again.

"An eyewitness account of one truce, by Llewelyn Wyn Griffith, recorded that after a night of exchanging carols, dawn on Christmas Day saw a "rush of men from both sides ... [and] a feverish exchange of souvenirs" before the men were quickly called back by their officers, with offers to hold a ceasefire for the day and to play a football match. It came to nothing, as the brigade commander threatened repercussions for the lack of discipline, and insisted on a resumption of firing in the afternoon."
BECAUSE DECIDING TO BE FRIENDS INSTEAD OF KILLING EACH OTHER IS WRONG. FUCK THAT BRIGADE COMMANDER!
