I have a similar story to the one about the German POW, My grandmother is German and grew up in Berlin during the second world war (she was born in 1941) and her father (My great grand father) was forced into the army and fought the Russians. Well he was captured and became a POW and my grandmother remembers her first meeting with him (this is where her story differs slightly) and she remembers just seeing a drunken old man in torn clothes and paper shoes and her mother telling her that this man is her father, im not sure but i think that was the last time she saw him and he died sometime in the 50s (There is only one known photo we have of him).
TL;DR
The second world war ruined my great grandfathers life.
Also I have lots of interesting stories my Grandmother has told me about growing up during the war and i would suggest if any of you guys have relatives who grew up then, listen to them it provides a differnt view point of the war.
