i want you to imagine a situation... you're walking down a dark empty road and suddenly a voice behind you tells you to slowly put your hands up or he'll shoot you, you have your legally carried weapon with you.... you don't know who the one behind you his and you don;t how far he is exactly.... what do you do?

Drop straight to the ground, draw, turn and fire. Some punk who wants to rob me won't be able to hit a moving target, and I can offhand at 100 yards with my Colt 1911. Problem solved.

My first thought is: "What are the chances this guy is telling the truth?"

I also don't know this guy's intention. Chances are he's trying to rob me, but he could also be intent on killing me. There is a slight chance the man has no bad intentions, but that scenario is so unlikely it can be disregarded.

I really don't want this guy to mess with me, but I also don't want to shoot if I don't have to. Most likely I'd slowly start to raise my hand up, while turning around and reaching for my weapon. I'm counting on the darkness to hide my exact actions long enough for me to look at the man and identify a firearm.

Quickly turn around and give the person your wallet.
Bonus points for tossing your wallet to him and shooting him while he catches it.

Turn around and use VATS. I have the perk so I can headshot him from far away with a pistol.

you think you are much faster than the potential armed criminal and you're are quick enough to take out your gun spot the criminal.. in the dark and hit him accurately.

in short you will try to be a bad ass and get yourself killed swiftly.

Well to put plainly you're screwed in that situation naturally. That would be the case if there were guns or no guns involved, the mugger would just launch a surprise attack from behind or have a knife to your throat if he/she had no gun. The US started all this talk on gun policy so I'll use statistics from their country, Now it's recorded that The US has 3.8 homicides out of every 100 000 citizens every year. That's 11 400 people, Nearly a quarter of these are accountable to drug violence, No major talks on drug law reform however, How many deaths in the USA are caused by Suicide ,38 000 three times the amount of homicide. Do Suicide patients get support from the US government? Mostly no, Are they get as large coverage by the media as gun control, no. How many deaths a year caused by diabetes? 500 000, half a million people with largely no healthcare reform or support to try and lower these death rates. Now don't get me wrong, there are some changes needed for gun control but not as much as many are saying. Increased gun control might lower homicides by a small percentage but that pales in comparison to other leading causes of death that are largely ignored.Forgive the large rant. Some statistics at www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/deaths_2010_release.pdf.

well, my point was, that from all gun related crimes in us, only a very small portion has to do with (forgive me the term) "normal" people (those with no recorded criminal history etc.) be it mugging or homicide, and in almost none of those cases the person actually has a chance to protect him/herself, gun owner or not

I agree, I just wanted to point out how this topic has been blown way out of proportion in North America. That although some things need to be changed regarding guns. We could save a lot more lives by focusing on other leading causes of death that are neglected.

I'd probably go for my gun. I don't get scared when I'm threatened, I go insane :\
