Actually, I hear the old fridges could protect you because they were lined with lead.

Comment 24 explained it pretty well so I'll just add that the force of the blast would likely tear it apart as well. But the fact they were lined with lead is the reason why they thought it would be plausible enough to put in the movie. Half of the things they do in adventure movies would never work, it just has to be rooted in reality enough that the average person can't say for sure if it would work or not without trying it. But any idiot could come up with dozens of reasons why that wouldn't work so they missed the mark with that one.

Not NEARLY enough.

Even if you didn't die from the heat, or being thrown around, the radiation would get you.
Gamma radiation would get through a few millimetres of lead easily.

Takes about 2 inches of lead to reduce gamma radiation to 1/10 of it's original flux, and a nuclear bomb releases a **** load, so you'd need way more than that.

lead is not going to proctect against the Nukes BLAST you know the really hot fire part? it will protect you agaisnt the radiation but who cares about that once your dead.

it would save you from the initial radiation if you weren't in the kill zone though

it depends on how close you were to the origin of the blast. you could survive on the outskirts of the blast in a fridge where you would have died if you were not in the fridge.

exactly. the force from a nuke isn't actually that powerful, it's the sickness that follows that kills the most people.

But even if you survived the blast, and the immediate Radiation wave. You would have to stay the fridge for years because of the fallout radiation. That's why the shelters you could buy during the Cold War wouldn't have worked. They never would have been able to stay in there for long enough to outlast the Fallout. So remember kids, when the nuclear apocalypse comes. Never go for the old fashioned fridge. Always go for the vault where people may or may not be commencing dangerous experiments on you.
