"settlement is under attack!"
User avatar #11 to #2 - muffincannibal (12/31/2015) [-]
Well maybe if you put some care into their defenses you wouldn't need to help them defend.

>spectacle island
>make this my main home
>over 250 defense

Ow ow, my personal favorite.

>Main settlement
>Dubbed Companion Capitol
>Every character thats a somebody is parked here.
>All decked out in some of the best armor, even gave some Legendary **** to some.
>Settlement surrounded by walls
>On walls automated defenses, rocket turrets, laser turret MkII's
>Only entrance heavily trapped
>200defense because overkill isnt in Webster 2287

>Get called over by random settler pleb

>8 sets of power armor just lying around, I was running around in maxxed X-01 with a jetpack
>strong with super sledge
>Cait with ashmaker

I only got to kill one, then proceed to yell at the settler for 5 minutes to get out of my power armor.

Preston keeps telling me to go help Sanctuary. The only settlements that get attacked are farms though

your joking right. ******* almost all 14 of my settlements have over 200 defense just so when they get attacked i just stand there and do nothing. in order to help protect them you still have to show up for whatever reason
User avatar #14 to #12 - muffincannibal (12/31/2015) [-]
And uh, if you're already there, sure help out. You just don't have to drop everything every time a base gets attacked.
User avatar #23 to #14 - cuntism (12/31/2015) [-]
You kinda do, if a settlement is being attacked, and you don't go, it suffers damage no matter the defenses, bit of a *******
User avatar #26 to #14 - kennyh (12/31/2015) [-]
You are wrong. The game engine rolls an instant lose no matter what your defenses are if you don't show up.
User avatar #13 to #12 - muffincannibal (12/31/2015) [-]
I think you're focusing more on the amount of guns you have, than the bases design. And you're probably expanding too quickly.

That's a very simple ******* reason to come this far to meet up.
User avatar #22 to #11 - cuntism (12/31/2015) [-]
It's a mechanism of the game, bases will be attacked regardless, although it is super awesome when it happens to a well defended base - you fast travel there and they are just getting slaughtered
User avatar #25 to #11 - kennyh (12/31/2015) [-]
If you don't show up they automatically lose.
#27 to #11 - comradewinter (12/31/2015) [-]
You do, though. Defense rating is just to reduce the amount of attacks, and the defenses themselves to help you defend the settlements. You still always have to show up, otherwise you'll get a "failed" on the quest line and the settlement will suffer damage to structures.

My current character only settled Red Rocket.
I only have my companions, crafting, storage, and armor there.
I set up food and beds to keep people happy.

And for some reason it's being attacked by super mutants literally 24/7.
Every time I stop by, there are atleast 10 mutant laying around, and 5 of them are attacking.
Cait, Strong, and Dogmeat have not once needed my help to defend it.
Another plus, I use the cannibal perk, so I have a Mutant feast to munch on while defending my base. Don't gotta use any stimpaks.

Oh, as for the minutemen. ****** . After the opening quest, I left Garvey and everyone else to their fate.
#46 to #45 - rockergamer (12/31/2015) [-]
my guess it takes all your settlements and randomly picks one of them

if you only have red rocket then you're guaranteed to get that settlement attacked

and your defense needs to be the sum of your power, food, and water or something to help prevent attacks
User avatar #52 to #46 - balor (12/31/2015) [-]
I don't pour alot into my main settlements defense.
On my first play through, I made a giant wall and had turrets cover every inch of the settlement. It never got attacked, and I got bored.

So I don't put alot of defense on my main, this way I can have fun with it.

You mean you don't like radiant quests? Next thing you are going to tell me is that you like original and well written missions, pfft, ridiculous
User avatar #30 to #20 - wedgehead (12/31/2015) [-]
The thing is, you shouldn't get radiant quests if you don't ask a particular NPC for one.
Brotherhood and others do it just right. Radiant quests to have something in late game, but after finishing one you can refuse a new one as long as you like.
Preston however pumps these quests into your PipBoy without you being able to dodge them.
User avatar #40 to #30 - oxidoferroso (12/31/2015) [-]
Totally agree, the Minuteman are just a completely disposable faction to justify settlements and the radiant quests are there to make them do something
#4 - funpunk (12/31/2015) [-]
I thought that if you got all the settlements under your control, Preston would finally shut the **** up. I'm too lazy to test the theory, but all hope was dashed when I was told to save Sanctuary Hills from raiders even though I killed everyone at the place they sent me to long ago. I moved some settler from one of my other settlements to Sanctuary, and later she walks up to me and gives me the quest. I thought it was a glitch, reloaded an old save, and moved her to another settlement before she could bother me. Then ******* Preston walks up to me and says that I have to go talk to her, and I have to go hunting halfway across the map for this bitch. I killed her at some point, and it was extremely satisfying.
User avatar #9 to #4 - greenbracelet (12/31/2015) [-]
I think you have to give them a lot of defenses, then they shouldn't bug you
#17 to #9 - anon (12/31/2015) [-]
No, its just random, but it favors the settlements with lowest defense compared to the others. Your settlements will always get attacked on regular basis.
User avatar #24 to #4 - cuntism (12/31/2015) [-]
It's a mechanic of the game so you always have something to do, like BOS and the haptic drive/clearing missions that never end

My first play through I thought I could get the scribe as my pseudo waifu and didn't know how the ******* optional missions worked, so I did them again... and again... and again... and again. I'm pretty ******* jaded to giving anyone any help in game anymore. Bastards.
User avatar #60 to #58 - cuntism (12/31/2015) [-]
Ha I did similar with settlements, I kept doing em over and over before I even did any real missions, by the time I played the game properly I was level 30, ruined it for me because I was so OP (yes I coulda downgraded myself but cmon who does that)

I get annoyed when it sends me to a farm which is already under my control - and i am told "There are some ghouls just down the road" but when you check the map marker, its 1 hour ~ trek the other direction
User avatar #38 - elmirbuljubasic (12/31/2015) [-]
Preston is the head of a raider sleeper cell designed to keep settlements constantly under attack so he can consolidate his power and tighten his grip on the Commonwealth.

He sends his raiders and gunners to various settlements, only to assign you and his Minutemen to those places to "rescue" the settlers. How does he know these places are under attack? The only long-range form of communication in Fallout 4 is radio and that has range limits far smaller than the entire map.

The raiders and gunners don't know Preston is also the person leading the counterstrike against their ranks because Preston isn't the leader of the Minutemen - you are. He gave you that title out of nowhere because it's convenient for his agenda. Why else would he name you the General after one mission? Why else would he be ordering the "General" around?

Meanwhile, by the end of the game if you go the Minutemen route, Preston has taken over "protection" of every settlement, he has got you to eliminate his only real competition in the Institute and the Brotherhood (the Railroad only cares about freeing Synths - doesn't interfere with his plans), and has done this all without lifting a finger.

TLR Preston is a villain and must be stopped. The Minutemen are the real "evil" organization.
User avatar #56 to #38 - theugandanhero (12/31/2015) [-]

Started a new game on survival where i never joined the minutemen after taking every last one that i got from Preston in my last one. Have to tell Preston to **** off everytime i see him in sanctuary. Once i just walked away and he still gave me the quest. I actually have to stop and tell him to **** off.

MFW when i mostly have empty settlements.

two playthroughs in a row, i've gotten stuck with a constant "help sanctuary with raiders at olivia satellite array". I'll get like one different one in between, but the next one will isntantly be "help settlers at sanctuary. and what bothers me more is every time i go up they're like "are you with the minutemen?" well first of all, no ******* **** , i own this settlement. second of all, no ******* **** , im the general, third of all, i've talked to you ten ******* times already about this.
#8 - applescryatnight (12/31/2015) [-]
slightly unrelated. spoiler warning cause im nice like that. Han Solo dies in the new movie, and Leia looks like Hillary Clinton.

ive decided on siding with brotherhood, but it turns out i cant return to my base at the castle without starting the castle under attack quest.
then i fight some hordes of institute mooks (which by the way make for some beautiful fireworks, when my 20 or so rocket launcher turrets start firing) but when i end the mission, i fail a ton of brotherhood quests

i reloaded a save to before liberty reprimed, and i continued down the BoS questline some more, but i really need to get home. im not quite sure how supply lines work cause i sent one person from sanctuary to the castle and i never saw them again nor did i get access to sanctuary items from the castle. i need to store my loot dammit.

why does the defend the castle quest fail all my brotherhood quests? is it because the defense quest could be against the brotherhood if you side against it, and the game is treating like siding against the institute is the same as siding against the brotherhood?
#28 to #8 - comradewinter (12/31/2015) [-]
Supply lines don't share inventory, they just allow you to build and craft with the components in the settlements that are connected. So if you dump a lot of Steel in Sanctuary, you can't withdraw it from the Castle, but you can still build with the materials. Also, I assume the Castle Under Fire quest ***** up your BoS progression because it technically means you're siding with the Minutemen, in which case you can't do both. You'll just have to finish the BoS quest line and move whatever you need to the Castle later.

#61 to #59 - applescryatnight (12/31/2015) [-]
the bottom was technically fallout 4 spoilers, i wanted to state some more concrete spoilers beforehand though, in case they werent considered real spoilers.
#66 to #8 - rockstarownage ONLINE (12/31/2015) [-]
if you got into the institute using the minutemen, then got on the bad side of the institute, it triggers the castle attack, its technically the end of the game by the standards of the minutemen.
supply lines only work in that you set up a supply line and you can access the stored resources in your main bench, but you can't access the individual items. (I think)
so basically you have a basketball stored in sanctuary. You supply line to castle, you can make something using the rubber from the basketball, however you can't access the bench and take the basketball, because it's not there, just the ability to break it down. when building

the only settlement attacks i've enjoyed so far are attacks on castle, when the enemies actually come in a group force instead of being spread around the settlement. And there was one at nordhagen beach where as soon as i spawned in, immediately had to take cover because i was getting fired on by rockets and a minigun by a group of supermutant masters. Other than that, ******* annoying to see "you failed to defend _____settlement" every so often and having to find an autosave before the time limit ran out.
User avatar #6 - kiaserzerg (12/31/2015) [-]
im a leve 25 and havent once gotten an alert on my settlements, and i barely do anything with them at all. and i am up to the point of going out to virgil in the glowing sea.
User avatar #7 to #6 - ICEDgrunge (12/31/2015) [-]
You have to actively engage in building settlements for one to get attacked. The more food and water a settlement has, the more chance it has to be attacked, and that's why you build defenses.
