You know, the last statement isn't as retarded as it sounds.
A lot of the places mentioned (Hungary, Ukraine, Serbia etc.) are states, referring to nation-states rather than the states making up the US. In addition, by separating the statements into 2 separate sentences we can take them to be unrelated, and to say that the 'United States are so big' is irrefutably correct when speaking in geographic terms.

ya but the terms can be used interchangeable because a sovereign state is a political organization with a centralized government that has independent authority over a geographic area and that is basically what a country is.
