Technically, Vader wasn't the dark lord of the sith. The dark lord is the highest sith and Palpatine was above him. Of course, most people referred to him as the dark lord of the sith because few knew that palpatine was a sith.

Darth is a shortening of Dark Lord of the Sith so Vader and all others who bare Darth in their name are Dark Lords of the Sith.

Just because they have Darth in their name doesn't make them the dark lord. Sith used Darth with their names because it was a tradition established by Darth Bane.
