Actually it was the Babylonian that decided that it was smart to cut the earths orbit into 24 smaller units. Not a stupid question at all.

bro, I know how long it takes for the earth to orbit the sun and I also know how long it takes for earth to spin around it's own axis.. I was being sarcastic with the "yes.. precisely.." that whole comment was like "here's what you're saying, you're fucking retarded, please think before spewing out your retard logic"

I'm pretty sure the number of units were decided before the name of the units. So if the Babylonians decided that the day should've been divided into 30 units, then some clever man said, hey let's call those units "hours" we would have a 30 hours day.

But then the "hour" would only be 48 of our "minutes". I could easyly decide that one earth orbit should be divided into 4 units called "dicks", and each "dick" divided into 360 and some "buts". The total would still be 1440 of our "minutes". You follow?
