What is the best thing you can do to protect your computer? Little habits, sites to avoid, sites to explain, etc.

I'll probably be making comps specifically on this topic. Couple short, but important tips would be:

-Keep anti-virus refreshed and updated. Daily, if possibly.

-Avoid suspicious sites. Anything that says "free" usually means "free virus".

-Exercise a healthy dose of skepticism. Even when it comes from your friends. Especially if it comes from your friends who are not particularly knowledgeable about this stuff.

-Take note of what you install/download/use. General rule is that complexity of the threat is proportional to its size, which also means its easier to notice and prevent before it does any major damage. That also means jack shit if you just gave it administrator rights.

securityexplain, please tell me why disregarding the suport of windows xp is such a big deal, and what zer-day exploits are and such
User avatar #15 to #14 - securityexplain (04/05/2014) [-]
I'm going to assume you're referring to the fact that Microsoft is halting their support of Windows XP in couple of days.

Hardware and software "evolve" at basically monthly basis, and considering that XP is an operating system, it is important for it to keep up with how that same new hardware and software works. Halting its support basically means that you'll have hard time running any hardware and software created after the support is stopped, and basically any malicious software or code will have a free reign in it.

Pretty much what would happen if USA would stop making new guns, and then China attacked it with Plasma Rifles and Terminator Mechs. It would have its defenses, but it wouldn't have any clue how to fight against that brand new, shiny stuff.

About zero-day exploits/attacks, which I assume you're talking about, those are bugs and vulnerabilities in software that developer failed to notice or simply didn't have time to fix, and are open to exploitation by individuals with malicious intents. They usually appear when new software is just released, or recently had major update.

For example, youtube (and generally, all video content websites) is infamous for its basically regular over-sights, which are then exploited, often in very creative ways.

I enjoyed taking network security courses to prep for the Security + & Associate of CISSP certs.

I haven't gone for them yet, when do you plan on going for yours?

explain the difference between a bastion host and a proxy server.
User avatar #6 to #1 - securityexplain (04/05/2014) [-]
As far as I know, getting certs usually requires your full attention for prolonged periods of time, which I cannot guarantee with my regular college duties. I am planning on getting certain certs that have significant presence in my country after I finish college, but thats at least 3 years from now. Maybe more, if I decide to take specialization course on the same college after I graduate.

Proxy server is a "middle-man" (usually an application) between two servers or users, while bastion host is a computer specifically designed and equipped to endure against attacks.

I'm sorry if some definitions appear odd, as I am not native English speaker, so I translate what I know pretty much on the fly.
