Welcome to part 2 of my Rogue Trader series. In this week’s comp, we’ll discuss the ability scores of Rogue Trader and how the relate to the scores of any other RPG. At the most basic, any RPG character needs 3 stats. The best examples of this are found in games like Path of Exile or Skyrim, where you see the “Big 3” in action. These stats are of course Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence. Pathfinder and D&D split each 3 in half, creating Constitution from Strength; Charisma from Dexterity and Wisdom from Intelligence. Rogue Trader, however, has even more stats. How many, you ask? Well…

Now, how do we determine the stats we get? Games like Fallout and Dragon Age feature a “point buy” system where you’re given base scores and points to spend, whereas tabletop RPGs tend to rely on dice rolls. Truth is, you can pick either one in this game!

Here’s a quick example of how all this works.

Now we get onto the attributes. First up, WS and BS.

If you’ve ever played Pathfinder or D&D, you’ll know that your attributes contribute to a modifier, which is added to your dice roll to see if you beat a certain score. In this game, however, your aim is to roll lower than your skill level. So if I have a WS of 57 and I’m doing an easy roll, I only need to roll lower than 87 (+30 from the difficulty). If, however the roll is difficult, I need to roll lower than 27. This is why it’s important to have high ability scores. Don't worry if this confuses you, I'll cover it later. Anyway, onto the physical attributes.

Now, don’t be alarmed if you roll too low on one score. You get one FREE re-roll. So if you do what I did and manage to roll a 2 (the lowest possible) on a score, you can re-roll and get an 18! There’s also the option of purchasing ability points in +5 increments for experience points, so don’t stress too much. Now, onto the final set of scores!

Again, thank you guys for taking the time out of our day to read this, I'm so sorry that this is so damn text heavy. Next week, we'll get discussing the origin path and then the week after that, I'll start on the classes.

Also, keep an eye out for next week, when I'll also start my Dark Heresy series! Get hyped!

Yeah, I'm running my first RT campaign soon, we got everyone's stuff sorted out and we're starting in a fortnight.

I'm also GMing a Pathfinder campaign with a different group of guys, but I am hoping to make a transition to the realm of Dark Heresy with those guys.

ok neat . im running 3 sessions too per weekend ( if everyone is able) one is only restricted to onlywar but the other two are "free" campaings which means that every warhammer rule book is in use (deathwatch, onlywar, rogue trader, black crusade and dark heresy) we coud share our ways of running the campaings as i woud love to know how others do it cause i want to do it as well as i can .

I'm not really sure if there's a specific "way" I go about my campaigns. The only one I've actually done proper sessions with is my Pathfinder group, and we're only at our second session. That being said, I have noticed a few things.

I'm a very generous GM. I remember playing a campaign under a different GM and he was rather stingy, as in, maybe 100 gold over the course of 6-7 months. I ended up giving each player that much in the first session. Not only that, but they've also managed to play with some Figurines of Wondrous power which will be confiscated next session

I also don't really stick to the rules, and so if they can come up with creative roleplaying, I'll let it slide. For instance, in the Shayliss Vinder encounter in Rise of the Runelords, you get caught almost doing the do by her father. What you're supposed to do is run a DC 20 diplomacy check (their roll + their diplomacy level needs to be > 20) and make buddies with him. The PC decided to bluff being blind. He barely passed, and now he has to pretend to be blind around the guy or it'll be game over for his relationship.

I'm not sure what else I can say about running them, except for learning how to use roll20. For any game, that's a lifesaver. If you do games where you only meet up once or twice a month, hold a mini session in between the big games. If you already use it, learn the ins and outs. Make sure your guys and gals know about macros and make sure you know everything you can do as a GM. I've prepared battles that aren't going to happen for months, and it's awesome.

Also, if you ever need a cave system or something check out this. donjon.bin.sh/pathfinder/dungeon/

Unfortunately, it used Pathfinder enemies, but you can always ditch them and bring in your own enemes
