Currently running what started as a we-miss-dnd-let's-start-something-quick-and-easy campaign that turned out to be more popular than anticipated.

It's the first time for using using D&D Next, or 5e. It's a video-gamey, base-building campaign: PCs are pioneer settlers to a secluded valley surrounded by "liquid" dungeons, themed dungeons that reset every day/whenever heroes leave. The goal is to build a growing city with a healthy economy, using revenue gained from a independent economy and loot from the dungeons.

Based on video games in that they build buildings on a photoshop, and they can "level" the buildings up to gain access to things related to that building. "Leveling up" the blacksmith includes recruiting a more qualified smith, rarer materials, etc. Every building has upkeep to be paid monthly but generate revenue/resources. The PCs have an advisor (me) who micromanages, hires contractors, goes on ambassadorial missions, et cetera, but they're otherwise leaders/mayors/kings of the city.

As far as resources go, I wrote about 6 pages detailing building management, economy, and a few pages in a notebook listing random events that can take place under different parent subjects (rumours for sidequests, things found in the forest by scouts they send out, merchant convoys carrying rare items, weather affecting revenue, etc). We also use the books for D&D Next. I do use a laptop, but mainly only for personal notes.

Every session starts with a small council with their advisor to plan what steps they want to take in developing town or contact with other cities, preparing for a dungeon crawl, doing said dungeon crawl, and planning development based on the first plans.

TL;DR build-a-base dungeoncrawl.

Dude. Are you that guy from the gamers movies!?! If not, you look a WHOLE lot like him. I am a huge fan of those movies ^^

Sorry, I'm not him, but I am a big fan of The Gamers. Did you know that they're still making stuff, alongside the Guys from Standard Action?

ive been runnign a game i put together with a bunch of people from here on roll 20 for about a year now. because of a job and a move weve been playing 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. most of the players are new to the game with a couple of them having never played before.

preperation for me is very minimilistic. the most prep i have is thinking the story through during the week. i consider myself more of a fluff DM because thats whats fun to me. i want a great story where the players have fun the bad guys make you hate them and the battles are epic.

i had a monk shining wizard our psion in the last session. the groups monk loved it

My groups playing pretty regularly. We had a dip before this but the 2 games we currently run during the week are thriving. The group in question has been one iv played with since my freshmen year of highschool (Context im a freshmen in college now) So roughly 5 years or so. The group has changed but the core group has remained the same. I attribute this mostly to the fact that our games are 100% online. We use the site Roll20 for our tabletop, though before that it was word of mouth and dice rollers. But we've sinced upgraded to the aforementioned site! We use skype to chat for the most part. As far as planning goes it seems that one of the more versed Dms in the group has taken to planning more, while the other gets an outline and wings it which is sort of what i do as well. It seems that if you can improv effectivly it makes a game feel slightly more organic. Lately iv been in love with our current game as im playing a surley Grey paladin who has a colored past and obssesion with dragons. My other friend rolled a rogue and we purposley busted our characters to test the current DM whos rather new. Hes dealt with is suprisingly well! We actually aquired a couple of red dragon welps through sheer force of grapple and beating into submission. (Unconsciousness) and while originally a bit much the DM handled it very well throwing a test with life or death threat to the dragons that has about roughlt 75% mortality rate imo that we managed to navigate rather well. The party has taken to calling one B (For best) and shes about as arrogant as one would expect. Hoping to get nurture over nature here as time goes cause shes already taken a liking to the paladin.

TL;DR We play mostly online and because of this my group seems to be persistant for at least 5 years, would recommend and dragons are the bomb.com

Me and some online fiends get together and plan out doing DnD. We get a virtual RSVP system to see who in the group is interested, we catalogue and coallate dates and times of availability. We write character sheets on Word and share them with Google docs or dropbox. Then we setup roll 20 accounts for everybody.
Then we never start the actual campaign. About 3 months from when we were going to start with very little word on when it "will be ready".

I played Table Top for a while with some friends, did around... 4 campaigns that never actually 'finished' other than one getting Chaos Dunked(Yes, Chaos Dunked)

We used a site called Roll20.net for the 'table' and rolls. Used D20psfrd.com for rules, and myth-weavers.com for character sheets.

When I DM'd a campaign, I did some planning, like setting for the next session to take place, a few encounters and some dialogue that was 'needed' but nothing huge.

Never did anything in real life cuz I'm anti-social as fuuuuck.

Essentially killed most of the planet. We used it to 'reset' the world for the next campaign we played.

I use 'maptools' (program for computer) and a framework for a campaign to play. I am a player in 2-3 campaigns ish at the moment.

I use internet for making some chars to look for an other oppinion about powers. I don't min-max all things, but i don't want a plain bad character.

In the group I play i do mainly DnD 4th edition, but I also have played Pokémon tabletop united(don't judge but it's fun at times, and skill system fun too).

The group I play with i don't play just DnD/Ptu with. (same 4-5 people) and with them I also play other games like Heroes of the Storm.

We type out everything, and practicly don't use skype to call since when we do it gets messy and not much progress is being made then, we only use skype to type in it since we use it for both the rpg and for other games(different chats but wtih same people+others).

Since we had the people i the skype chat and we play the same set of games with each other mainly we don't really look/search for things, nor are we doing. With 5 we got enough 'issues' already and a big enough party.

Our sessions aren't really long and 1 short evening mostly.

Main DnD campaign is going on in a country where a war is going on(not actively yet where we are) and we semi ish do a job for a psion now(npc ofc), but it is also quite a lot of messing around, together with HARD encounters at time. Encounters are hard to beat but gm is generous with not killing chars off, and when it happened to we had a revive scroll and we were quite high ish level. Level advancement fast.

Party concists of Eldarin swordmage, Warforged warlock, Half-elf(I think) Ardent, Multiclass ranged Ranger and rogue(char can have insane movment per turn) and changeling vampire(mine).

I am currently sort of reading 5e shadowrun manual though since i am thinking about hosting a cyberpunk campaign but I am quite lazy...

Other campaign should also start soon(ish) and for that i want to make a beastmaster ranger, i just got to start writing a little background.

I don't know or any of this has osme use to you but enjoy?

Not really... its like 2 evenings a week max or so... since one guy can't between 9-10 pm. So most of the times its 7-9 and 10 till 11 or 12 depending on day... Basicly most sessions are 3 hours, sometimes 4, and 2-3 per week
User avatar #9 to #8 - ciaphascain [OP](10/31/2015) [-]
LEGIT. I usually do every week, or every other. My friends DEMAND that I always DM. Which isn't a bad thing, but I like to be a player too.

I dont DM much infact ive only done it once as a stand in for my buddy but we mostly talk over text for setting up dates and settings. Im kinda like co DM in the group and I talk with everyone to get input on what kind of things they want to accomplish at the next session.

I know I would have an easier time of it if I had a co-DM managing Player goals. Thanks for the idea!
