Rather than Humans being inferior species that just manage to beat all odds with
the skin of their teeth with their well rounded jack of all trades, are there any games
where they are the "Elves" of the series? The kind where other races see Humans
as the scary elder race that who have unique abilities that give them advantages
over all others?
I was thinking about it in the classic sense based on old folklore, A world where
there is no Humans, only Elves, Dwarves, and Ores. How would they react to
something that deosn' t follow their laws of physics/ magic?
AIE) drome magic immunity, in exchange for limited magical power
mysterious affinity fire and knowledge of "forbidden arts" aka Technology,
forged by Human hands inherits Human properties, "Cold Iron" that literally burn Elves and ether notahuman
creatures
siren is considered term all races (even Dwarves) except Humans
mack of magic is considered the same as lack of a soul, Elves and ethers think Humanity is a Lovecraft horror when they see that,
IT' S LITERALLY NOTHING, AND IT' S LOOKING BACK AT US!"

That's cool, but by "using their life essence as a weapon", I mean, like, they'll hit arteries to use like shotgun blasts to melt aliens or **** .

If that makes any sense.
#54 to #52 - homestuckxplain (09/20/2015) [-]
Meh, I wouldn't see it working with humans, seeing how we'd only be good to kill 2-3 alien suckers before be bled out.

Not to mention, the original premise wouldn't work. The Iron in our blood that is supposed to be the Elven weakness is trapped in the Hemoglobin molecule in the Red Blood Cells.

Elfs'FW we douse them with a bucket of human blood.
User avatar #55 to #54 - tenaciouslee ONLINE (09/20/2015) [-]
Medically, it doesn't work, but if we're talking elves and **** , then it's magic, and I ain't gotta explain **** . Just imagine it, a human is trapped by two elves, and he shoves a knife into a bodily artery and shotguns them with blood and they just melt into a pile of blood and failure.

That sounds so cool to me.
#57 to #55 - homestuckxplain (09/20/2015) [-]
I don't think I know any show where a HUMANS blood is detrimental to others, since that's usually the aliens job. Ah well, perhaps one day.

Unrelated note. You're perfectly suited to being a Mage of Blood. Using blood all smart-like to kill things around you at the expense of yourself.

Or...
Just hear me out here...
Or they could not slit their wrists and risk paralyzing their hands
Or killing themselves
Or be emo

Maybe they could be called something like Sanguine Knights
And they fight with blood that doesn't have to be their own.
They can coat their armor in it. They can coat their weapons in it. They can coat their arrows and crossbow bolts in it. They can even make blood-bombs, or put blood in paintball guns ammo.

Just something about people slitting their wrists and running after their enemy like "I'm gonna get you!" sounds cringy as **** to me.
User avatar #81 to #79 - tenaciouslee ONLINE (09/20/2015) [-]
First off, >>#67

Secondly, not them running in like *SLASH* "IM GONNA GIT YA", more like, they damage themselves before the fight, like stabbing themselves in the palms to soak their hands in blood, and then they could use, basically, acidic punches, or something like that.

Fighting without your own blood is only reserved when a comrade dies, if a comrade dies, they cut him open, reach their arms in him, and fight with his blood and essence to avenge him, plus, it's ******* badass if you use your own life to take other lives, if you're willing to, say, bleed, in order to kill your enemy, that's hardcore.

I once played a character in D&D and d20 modern known only as the 'Gun Wizard'. He was an offensively slavic wizard who could turn pretty much anything into a gun, and it would take aspects from the items used to craft it. His magical reagents were vodka, duct tape, and blood.

Gate(a anime which came out this season) follows the technology as scary magic to the natives, but they also include native humans who do have and use magic(a few of them do).
The Dresden Files also follow that pattern to a degree, when humans technology and numbers make them a doomsday weapon to bring against supernatural beings.

The Bryyo Lore in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption followed a similar line. It's actually a really interesting read.

In many myths and legends of the Fae, iron is toxic to faeries and fae creatures.
Theres a book trilogy known as "The modern tale of Faerie" that does this very very well.
Its worth a look if youre interested.
Its also part of a spinoff to the mortal instruments series.

I've been looking for a good book to read, but tell me this, its not some teen romance book right? Iv'e been recommended so many books recently that ended up being directed towards a 14 year old high school girl rather than me. Not that thats an issue, I can appreciate good writing in any form, but I'm a bit burned out on them. Is it a good series in that sense?
User avatar #26 to #25 - lordmaddie (09/19/2015) [-]
If you're interested, I've read some good books lately. Here's a list of the one's that aren't romancey:

Left Hand of God trilogy (Paul Hoffman)
Demon Cycle books (I think that's what it's called, the first one's The Painted Man)(Peter V Brett)
Gentleman Bastards books (Again, think that's what they're called, the first one's The Lies of Locke Lamora)(Scott Lynch)
Night Angel trilogy (Brent Weeks)

I love the Night Angel Trilogy. Also, I dont really mind romantic undertones, or even a straight up romance, I just dont think I can take another teen YA romance. They're a bit pandering. Thank you so much! I think I'm gonna go for the Left Hand of God trilogy.
User avatar #60 to #26 - Stamyham ONLINE (09/20/2015) [-]
Demon Cycle is amazing, absolutely love the books and Peter Brett can't write nearly fast enough to satisfy my cravings.
Night Angel is also amazing, and Brent Weeks is also working on a second series called the Lightbringer series with a really creative and interesting magic system going on.
And I think it's the Gentleman Bastard (singular). Not a big deal. I'm just nitpicking.

Would also recommend the Malazan series if you're into super epic fantasy series with a 3.5 million word count over 10 books.
The Fitz series is great too, and is split up into multiple trilogies (first one is the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb).
Would also recommend the Demon Accords series by John Conroe if you like fast paced, gritty urban fantasy (super short books, though, and the writing style is good but not great).
If you want more suggestions, feel free to pm me. I read a *ton* of sci-fi/fantasy and would be happy to recommend stuff to anyone.

The mortal instruments kind of shifts towards that romance thing every now and then.
Its like a looming shadow that you know is there, but never actually takes hold of the story.
If thats not your thing then A modern tale of Faerie is better for you.
It may be a spinoff, but if you havent read the previous it doesnt really matter.

Still only a few chapters in, but middle-earthy type setting, except humans are expanding everywhere and wherever they go, magic diminishes and eventually disappears. Elder races like elves, dwarves and orcs start to band together to try and halt the humans advance, but rely too heavily on magic, don't understand this new-fangled 'science' that the humans use. Told from the point of view of a motley band of orc mercenaries who like fightin', drinkin' and more fightin'.

I'm writing something like that. Not like HFY, but a bit more grounded, except for the fact the story is located in space. I've come a considerably long way with this story, and I've chosen what I want to do with this story.

It's about a first space mission after 14 failures that tried to launch a craft with a man into interstellar space where supposedly a mysterious signal came. The engineering had to be done smart, and had to be thrifty, so the mission sent 10 men into death over the course of 30 years, and destroyed that much crafts aswell, before opting for a thrifty way of recycling spacecrafts and testing pilotless interstellar travel.

In the story the technology that is created to launch the spacecraft over large distances in short time is reffered to just as 'smart engineering', and not much is said about that. The story follows several main characters, one of which is our hero laucnhed into interstellar space and others who make up the mission staff and fill roles that tell the story of a dying earth.

So anyway, upon ariving to a location which is a supposed source of a mysterios signal, our hero is hijakced by an organisation much like galactic control-nazi's. Our hero is being kept as their prisoner in a dark room untill one of this captors decides to confront him and ask of his origin. But our hero presents himself as a tough negotiator and strangles his captor with the same chains he's been restrained with.

There are many more stories like this I have planned, few I have written, and in all of them aliens appear not much different than humans except for in shape and attributes that specifically make them different (kinda in a way that dwarves, elfves and humans are set apart by some differences). And since our hero is the first human ever to be in those parts of the galaxy, he is a complete engima to them, and is giving them a hard time, since he will stop at nothing to find a cure for his dying planet Earth.

Stories are mostly told in restrospect, in a form of a author narrated captain's log or main characters' thoughts. Plotlines of bother the traveling hero and the ones back on Earth are intertwined, both having major impact on eachother despite being millions of lightyears apart. It's a WIP, whacky in it's own way (first shown experience the hero has with other galactic species is confronting an insect-like alen pimp who wants him as an attraction in his pleasure house.

Mass Effect did something similar to this. Sure, it looks like humans are the underdog because the Council hates you, but talk to enough aliens and you'll realize humans are taking over the galaxy. You know those Batarian asshole terrorists? They only became evil outcasts because they were the only species that said hey maybe it's not a good idea to give the humans a ton of planets to colonize. And they routinely get their asses kicked by the younger humans.

Humans also managed to fight off the most powerful military in the galaxy immediately after making first contact. That's right, seconds after discovering alien life, humans kicked it's ass. Then we proceeded to make improvements to that military by introducing carriers and co-designing the greatest stealth ship ever.

See while each species has it's area of expertise, the best humans can equal them in it. Asari have biotics, turians have tactics, salarians have intelligence, but you'll meet humans who are just as good. Essentially the game takes the standard 'humans are average' trope and makes it incredibly powerful. Throw in more ambition and curiosity than any other species has, and it's no wonder the reapers are interested in humanity.

And that's not even touching all the crazy **** Cerberus is into.

Humans being "jack of all trades" WAS a hilariousl advantageous trait in almost every fantasy setting involving both human, and nonhuman races. The elves would be able to specialize in magic, but would be considered **** in everything else. Orcs and ogres would be wildly brutish in nature...but that's it.

It's also heavily implied in these fantasy world that the races would be wildly xenophobic, where elf/orc/dwarf alliances were nothing short of a miracle. Meanwhile, a near literal bear of a human would often partner up with a twig of a wizard as well as a moderately fit rougish type to have specialties no party of orcs or elves could ever exhibit. A thugish human donned in magical armor and weapons would have an edge over any average orc while a human mage would have a physical edge over any elf.

That and it's typically noted that humans are psychologically, and thus morally adaptive as well. A human mediator is just as likely to throw both warring parties under the bus just because he's annoyed to no end at the bickering. An elf requiring more physically inclined help might get along better with a human than with a dwarf, and vice versa with a dwarf requiring magical aide.

As well, it would also seem humanity has this innate sense for practice over natural skill. While the other races would be born with an innate proficiency for certain skills, its implied that you're born with whatever innate ability you possess. Humanity, meanwhile, can practice any skill they might be inclined to and have the potential to surpass any innate ability with practice.

Note how in the "The Lord of the Rings" universe, all, if not most, of the wildly powerful, and respected wizards are humans, not elves. It's because Gandalf will pick up a sword and slap a bitch if need be.
