Hoarding is a suboptimal form of banking since it stays in one place and never re-enters the economy without significant effort. This keeps investment spending low, preventing any significant growth due to high reserves of gold being kept in a large pile.

I would totally read a story about some buisness guy getting warped into fantasy land and defeating the Ancient Evil attacking it by manipulating the primitive economy there with modem high powered financial analysis.

How long has it been since Lord Terrence of Newark entered the lair of Alaskan the Infernal?"
Three hours- Let us pray whatever duel he fights in there ends with his victory, and not the ruin of these lands in dragon fire."
Meanwhile, in the depths of the mountain's-
And then the interest gets com pounded annually on top of your initial deposit, so hoard growth accelerates the longer you leave it."
Okay, I get that. Why is it still a bad idea for me to plunder the town, financially speaking? Can' t I supplement my income?"
Well you could, but is counter productive- The interest rates banks offer you depends on their ability to possiably invest, so if you make their other loans more risky, you' re losing money in the long run. Besides that, if the bank loses enough money it invested in the town, it might fail
completely, and then you can' t get your capital back. You' basically plundered yourself."
Intriguingly- And what if I take care not to plunder properties built with my bank' s money?"
As long as you' re in the same general region that would still drive up the perceived risk of importantly than that, it would tank the housing market and that just ruins everything. If you' re not in the same region you might get away with it temporarily, but once this Medieval crap gets thrown out
we' re going to get globalization and won' t be viable-"
In the short term though?"
Well, you' d see pretty nasty inflation if you kept bringing back gold and dumping it on the local economy, and then you' d have currency issues and loss of consumer confidence. Nat good either."
l, Alright, fine, we' ll do it your way."

Furthermore, Mr the Infernal, if I may, an aggressive system could see your rate of return increase"
You know, burning bandit camps, checking the advance of oncoming armies, and so forth. By providing such a service, you' re increasing the region' s stability, making it a more desireable investment community, thus increasing your share."
So I' m to whore myself out as the mercenary guard dog of these paltry apes?!"
Nat at all, sir. Think of it like this: you would kill any man who stole your coins, right?"
I would hunt him to the ends of the earth, and rare his lands and home, devour his bloodline, and burn his name from history."
TII take that as a yes. IN this settup, Alaskan, if I can call you Alaskan, all those paltry apes just turned into your gold coins- And you know the beautiful thing about using them as your hoard, sir?"
What?"
Leave ten coins in a cave for IO years, you' ll have IO coins- Leave IO humans on the mountain IO years, you' ll have Ah We' re a good investment, sir."
You better be"
God, now I' m imagining the region in 25 years or so, where the dragon is seen as a patriarch of the town, probably has a festival in his honor. And he' s still grumbling about one day giving it all up and burning this place to the ground if they don' t cook the oxen right this year-

Then try reading the magic of recluse novels by L.E. Modesitt Jr.

I can't say it's as economical as this, but all of his 'heroes' have a profession.
In the first book Aptly named "the Magic of Recluse" the guy is a woodworker.

Other characters range from blacksmith, mercenary captain, to a wainwright (barrel maker) turned lawyer.

The main point is that he focuses on the fact that his character's have NORMAL lives outside their heroing that they have to make a living with.
