Alright y'all bunch a ******* , listen the **** up or I'll break your damn kneecaps. Hear tell of the mightiest character that was ever conceived: Thundak The Trustworthy.

Thundak the Trustworthy was a Dragonborn Sorcerer, capable of wielding great magics due to his draconic bloodline. Also, he was a half dragon. A half dragon dragonman with the blood of a dragon, he had 20 strength, 20 charisma, and an AC of 16 as the group's caster. He was the embodiment of cheese. Now, early on, Thundak rolled a 20 on a search check in the local noble's castle, and discovered a ring of +2 Charisma. With a Charisma of 22, Thundak's ascent into godhood did begin. First, he convinced the local noble, a wealthy Duke, that this land belonged not in fact to the royal family, but to an old bloodline of dragons of which Thundak was a part. Thus, he gained control over a large and comfortable Duchy at level 3. Putting the townspeople to work, he managed to mine out a significant chunk of Adamantine resting deep beneath the earth, in addition to many gems and a supply of silver.

With his newfound wealth, Thundak and the party quickly continued to amass political power, with the party going through and assassinating key political figures to maintain a certain level of combat in the campaign. Things were fairly reasonable, until we hit level six. At level six, the DM hid some ******** magical items behind in the cave of a mighty giant. Now, the idea was for us to run from the giant, and come back later only to find the cave obliterated and the magic stolen by the campaign's big bad, a nasty Warlock planning on bringing his eldritch patron into the world. The giant quickly proved too great a threat for the party, so Thundak did what any high charisma character should do.

"You know, DM, this giant is pretty lonely up here, alone in this mountain, right? Can I convince him that it's because nobody loves him?"
"Sure, it's gonna' be hard, because you know, he's trying to kill you, but you can try,"
Rolled a natural 20.

The giant, mighty though he was, broke into tears. A horrible sadness overcoming him, which was only the first part of Thundak's grand plan. "You know, giant, I bet if you were to die, things would get better for you in the astral plane,"

Another natural 20, and the giant slit his wrists with an axe.

I convinced the boss of the early game to kill himself, and found the item that allowed the true ******* to begin: after a roll of 98 on the d100, I find a potion that will double any one stat for one week.

Of course, I picked charisma, and it was a wonderful time.
Thundak was everything.
He was the rogue, because he could talk open locked doors and convince traps to shut themselves off.
He was the group's caster already, but he was now stupidly good at it.
He was the group's healer, because he persuaded wounds to close.
But it was the bravest gambit that worked the best. While visiting the temple of Kord, Thundak knelt at the alter, and put all of his charismatic powers into a single prayer, "Grant me great strength," he prayed, and Kord, convinced by Thundaks 44 Charisma, was swayed. Divine power infused him, granting him incredible strength and mystical might, however, it would not stay. In fact, Thundak used it all up to do a single feat: make his mighty charisma last forever.

In this attempt to use my new powers to make my others permanent, I rolled a 5, and lost my divine powers in the process, but managed to achieve my goal. With this, I then moved on to a new level of cheese.

We had a bard in the party, who also had incredible charisma. Now, one 15+20 Persuasion roll later, I had persuaded the bard for his soul. I took this, and consumed it, adding his own stats to mine.

My charisma was now 60.

With my unstoppable persuasion, I proceeded get up on a podium, and preach that I was a god.

I hit the character limit. If you all want more, gib green thumbs.

So where's the rest?
#149 to #148 - nerdking (12/23/2015) [-]
Meh, I was going to push a little more, but it's Christmas.

Now, at this point, things really started going my way. I stood on a street corner, preaching my divinity for to all who would listen, I held the d20 in my hand, and let the die roll.

It was a 1. A critical failure.

The party was arrested by the church for heresy, and thrown in a dungeon to rot. Unfortunately for the church, they assigned Thundak a guard to insure he didn't escape. Thinking quickly, Thundak convinced his guard that he needed to open the door, let Thundak out, and lock himself inside the cell. After that, the party proceeded to fight their way out of the church eventually stopping at the Altar of Kord once more to pray for forgiveness and gain pardon for their heresy...Or at least, that was the plan.

Things went awry, when the fighter, wizard, and rogue all biffed their rolls to appease the god of war, and wound up personally and irredeemably offending him so much, that he came down from the Astral Plane to personally wipe the party. It seemed like it would be the end of us, so Thundak tried something incredible.

Thundak claimed that Kord was a potato, and that he was in fact Kord. Why not, we were going to die regardless.

Until I rolled a 20.

There was a boom of thunder and a flash of light, as the mighty Kord realized that he was naught but a lowly Potato, and transferred his divinity into me. Now, like any good party member, I transferred this power out amongst the party, and we decided that our new objective was to replace the gods as masters of existence.

User avatar #119 to #1 - tonyxx (12/16/2015) [-]
Real fun once you get into it. Most comic/hobby shops have DnD nights so look around on the internets for places you can stop in for as they are generally really open to newcomers. just flatout leave if any of those losers try and make you play any DnD that ain't pathfinder or 5th.
#142 to #119 - pentol (12/16/2015) [-]
without really knowing it, i get the impression that 5th edition, while being generally better than 4th, is inferior to 3,5, according to most of /tg/

I haven't really had much time to mull over 5th edition yet only around 3 sessions , but it most certainly much better at getting new players into the game than Pathfinder. whether it's better or not can't be fairly decided until more stuff for 5th comes out give me my ******* Goliaths .

He definitely set you on the right path with the PHB (his first link), DMG (the second), and MM (the third). Definitely, definitely read most of your info from the PHB as it has most of the core mechanics in it for use. The DMG is a guide made to help to be DMs learn exactly what they want out of their campaign and players.

Word of advice, read portions of it and inquire to others who've played it before what their take of it is. From my personal experience, the best game play comes from mostly followed rules and a bit of homebrewing, if you followed every rule in the book, you'd be stuck rolling for some of the simplest things.

Additionally, your best experience will come from playing instead of running since DMs have a lot more work to do. If you have any questions feel free to ask me, I've played 3.5e, Pathfinder, 4e and 5e. Most knowledgeable in 3.5e and Pathfinder though.

Find a group (or find some interested friends) and start playing.
Here are the rulebooks, I reccomend dnd 3.5
www.aegisoft.be/costa/data/roleplay/D&D%203.5%20-%20Players%20Handbook%20%5BOEF%5D.pdf
www.goddessfantasy.net/Upload/dnd/3e/DMG.pdf
www.reality.net/dnd/pdf/DnD%20-%20Monster%20Manual%20I%20-%20OCR.pdf

You don't need to read all of it, just get the jist of it, and if you're not dming, just focus on the first book.
If you are dming, just find a story online for your first few and stick to that before making your own.

User avatar #80 to #76 - thegamepixel ONLINE (12/16/2015) [-]
It varies. A single session can be 2-5 hours depending on your group. Your first few games may be only 3-5 sessions, but later on you might be playing once a week for months on a single campaign. 1 offs aren't very common in dnd. If you want a game you can pick up and finish in 1-2 sessions, I reccomend Call of Cthulhu, its my favorite tabletop rpg.

There's natural twenty rolls, so are there unnatural ones?
#68 to #67 - pentol (12/16/2015) [-]
yes. ish...
characters can have items or points in skills that give them bonuses to perform actions. say you have skills and items giving you a +4 bonus to climb. you roll the dice and get a 16. you can now pass a skill check of 20, and it would technically be an unatural 20, even tho most would call it "20, with the bonuses" or something like that.
a "natural 20" is the dice showing 20, before you add any bonuses. most games treat 1 and 20 as critical failure, and critical success, respectively, and you will succeed or fail any action (sometimes spectacularly) even when considering bonuses.
so even with no bonuses from skills or items, you can still clear a skill check requiring 25, if you roll a natural 20. or fail a skill check of 5, even if you have +6 to that activity, if you roll a natural 1.
User avatar #70 to #68 - PvtToucher (12/16/2015) [-]
sweetness! I would love to get into this with some mates but I feel like I lack the creativity.. and friends who would want to play. **** the closest thing I've played to it is a game called munchkins. thanks for the explanation man!

know that the stories that are posted to FJ are the ones that were worth the screencap of the *chan post, that was worth posting. the standards are set pretty dam high if you go off these. the most important thing is that you try to have at least one big motivation for your character, and at least two defining traits of personality for them, and you can function.
lemme try to make a few ideas for easy to roleplay characters on the spot:

a wizard that is tired of study in the library, and seeks more exciting and exotic magic, that gets too excited about new spells, and takes his speech on seemingly unrelated tangents.

an elf who seeks to find their clan, but has nothing but their own tattoos to go by. They are risk averse, and sees value in delivering decisive blows that will ensure the foe can never hurt them again. speaks in efficient sentences.

the recordkeeper who needs to document the different races's typical quirks and customs for the racist noble they serve (who wishes to expell all non-[your race here] from their land, and the entire kingdom) that will always seek to satisfy their own curiosity, and gets nosy, and is ignorant of obvious risks.

the sheltered son of a lord, sent out to toughen up, and who has trouble adapting to the world outside the city, but despite snobbishness and aversion to getting his hands dirty, is also very kind and caring.

once you have your own character with some characteristics, it's fairly easy to sink into the role, and making the decisions that such a character could reasonably well make.

if you can create a character like that, which feels defined (and isn't either a powerfantasy, or grimdark'n'edgy) you will easily be a great companion to roleplay with. consistency is more important than those bursts of brilliance that gets screencapped. with more experience, those moments will occur naturally anyways.

if there is a shop for hobby suplies, comic books, or similar, they might be able to put you in touch with a group of players, or you can go online and look for people.

Don't be afraid of being the DM yourself and convincing some of your friends to play with you. That or go to a comic book store and ask around there or at work/school if anyone has a group that would be willing to let you join. Most people are hyped to have a new person interested and will gladly take you in.

A player in my Call of Cthulhu game decided that he'd try to break into other people's hotel rooms to steal some alcohol. He went up to another player's room and tried to disguise his voice as your typical mexican maid despite having a 5 in disguise, he ended up getting a 4. The player inside the room decided to ignore it cause the room was clean enough. The would-be burgler player decided to shoulder-check the door and knocked it down no problem. So the player in the room decided to blow his kneecap off with his trusty .45 handgun.

I wanna get into DnD.
But I have no friends that would play.
And pretty much only my siblings would be willing to play.

Not a biggy, except for the fact that they always end up flipping over the board every time they are met with an inconvienance.
