User avatar #19 to #18 - the fuzzball (12/28/2015) [-]
basically its DM practice. i have 3 bestiarys and I roll 1d3 and then 1d291 and then what ever page that is in whatever bestiary. thats what you fight. as a DM, describing combat is my weak point so Im running this little arena fight as basically practice but Im thinking of actually giving it a story and taking it somewhere. we only have 2 players so the more the merrier.

The most popular system in the group is Pathfinder, but some people also play Mutants and masterminds, shadowrun (5e personally), Call of cthulu and so on.

Im up for some DnD. I think im a terrible DM but my buddies think im above average at it. Personally I feel no enjoyment from DMing because I spend so much time worrying about how to properly push the party into the direction of the story. (im a terrible writer as far as stories go.)

But ive played 3.5e and 5e DnD and I have done a bunch of reading on DMing and the best ways to go about it. So I can help throw some tips at you about those.

Basically, Id be up to help throw some tips at you and if you can find a DM I wouldnt mind coming along for the ride.

Isnt pathfinder the updated version of 3.5? Never played it before but im interested. My giving me a little background on it?
User avatar #17 to #13 - the fuzzball (12/28/2015) [-]
background on pathfinder or the campaign? cuz pathfinder is just what you said, an updated version of 3.5, it has a big improvement to the skills list and some additional feats and stuff but essentially its 3.5. As for the campaign, i dont know if you can even call it that, basically its DM practice, its an arena that we randomly roll monsters for the other players to fight and give me a bit of practice with mainly battling cuz thats where my DM skills are weakest. I've been thinking of doing something with it and maybe turning it into an actual story but atm its just an arena fighter. still the players seem to enjoy it all the same.

Ive never been into DnD for its combat, im mostly into it for the story/interaction between characters. Though if you change the set up Id be interested in doing a game.
User avatar #24 to #23 - the fuzzball (12/29/2015) [-]
Yea I'm the same way but as a DM i gotta be good at everything that might happen. I dont want my players to lose interest because they happen to be in a lengthy fight and all I keep saying is "you hit......you miss......hit.....hit...." that gets boring for me too. But it's only been one session and Im already thinking of fun interaction stuff to do when not in battle so if it changes Ill let you know.
User avatar #25 to #24 - reaperriley ONLINE (12/29/2015) [-]
I feel you. The guy who got me into DnD was really good at giving detailed descriptions of combat. But like myself, I wasnt really good at end game goal. But yeah, let me know. I live on the east coast of the US to give you an idea of my time zone.

Just a little tip, you're usually better at DM'ing than you think you are. If you're having fun and your players are having fun, you're doing well.

And I find that not worrying about whether your players follow the story and just rolling with what they're trying to do provides a more compelling experience. Just make sure you give them the opportunity to follow your plot, and things should go well.
User avatar #27 to #26 - reaperriley ONLINE (12/31/2015) [-]
Oh I know. My issue is I dont really enjoy DMing. I let them roll with what they do and go off the beaten path if they want to. But when I do DM, its more just the reason of why these characters are together. Now I know PCs only real job is not INTENTIONALLY just to split up the group, but I can never find a compelling reason to have all the characters join up for whatever it is.

Im basically terrible at the overall story while I can do details and **** amazingly.
#28 to #27 - alexanderh (12/31/2015) [-]
Fair enough.
That part is usually hand-waved, or it's explicitly stated that they're working together on a job at the start, and they just end up working together from then on because of friendships.
