Paladins of Kord can be played with the Freedom variant for Paladins in 3.5, and I've always found CG Paladins of Kord to be almost a quintessential Marine. Which always appealed to me, sadly I've just never done it.

Long story short, I was tricked into playing with a deck of many things one story later and ended up being beaten to death by a six-armed demigod armed with six foam bats.

Okay, since D&D related post. I feel obligated to share my first time ever D&Ding.

Here I am, young wizard kobold. Having always wanted to play D&D, due to neverwinter nights, and been yearning for any group at all to play with, I quickly jumped on the first group I could find. I knew the -very basics- of the rules, mostly due to neverwinter, and how some stuff worked. I also knew as much as that wizardry is basically taboo in said little runty creature's culture, and that kobolds are small, feisty and wannabe-dragons, so I could keep myself to some funny comic-relief character with actual depth to it.

Highlights of my experiences include (Some from the other player's perspective):
>The DM going "I have gotten my character OFFICIALLY PUT INTO THE LORE BY GARY GYGAX HIMSELF "
>"Of course your level 5 Wizard can murder all of the party if you just -tried-. You just don't know how."
>Upon asking "How do I do that", to the above point, was responded with "You have to find that out by yourself! That's the point!"
>All of these books are legal. They are TSR LEGAL, they just weren't published.
>Psions are overpowered, they can store all their Power points into this glass lens for weeks on end, every day, and fire it when they want for 492d6 damage. They can do ANYTHING. VIRTUALLY ANYTHING, you just gotta know how.
>We are playing wolfborn. They get +10 to every physical stat, but in exchange, the entire world hates them. You gotta play with us for at least six months before you are "allowed" to use this race.
> I AM PLAYING A HALF ILLITHID HALF FIRE ELEMENTAL. AND I AM PLAYING A HALF-EARTH ELEMENTAL WERETIGER. I AM PLAYING A HALF-FIRE elemental RASASHA. I am playing three wolfborn characters as my characters. > Okay guys, I expect you to prepare multiple characters. I have a CHARACTER GRAVEYARD, where I store the sheets of every character that has died in my campaign. When CHaracters go there, they are dead and gone, forever. You are never allowed to play your character again in any game once a character is in the graveyard.
>Every session was started with "Okay, so the DM got tired of our last campaign. He wanted to try something new, so make a new character. You are on a boat / tavern / graveyard / riverbank". This happened for five consecutive weeks, and we played once or twice per week. A new campaign, every time. Because nothing got done, everything was chaos, no one did anything coherent and / or spent the city by saying they gathered everything they had into a nuke to blast the city.
>When the group finally buckled and caved, I got the message "THE GROUP HAS BEEN DESTROYED. OBLIDERATED. -ANNIHILATED-, This means you are never allowed to play in any group containing any members of the group that you have played with now.

Honestly, sounds like you just had a lousy group. Everyone is more focused on how super-special-awesome they can make their characters rather then thinking about whether or not said characters make any sense, the world they're in makes any sense, or if they are really characters at all.

Hopefully your next group is more down to earth.

I'd suggest if money and accessibility is important, try Pathfinder. It's very similar to 3.5, but with some modifications to streamline it a bit, and it's manufactured by Paizo, not Wizards of the Coast, and part of Paizo's thing is that all the books are available free online.

I've heard on /tg/ that Pathfinder is a ******* mess and a half. Apparently, there's a huge disparity between the power of casters and non-casters, to the point where a fighter may as well just be hitting ****** with soggy cereal boxes. I'm not sure if this is %100 true, since I can't into role playing games, but you should keep it in mind. I've also heard that Exalted is awesome and features super high power level fights where reshaping the geography of an entire region, like in pic related, is a regular occurrence. I'm not sure if this is true either because, again, I can't into role playing games.

Thats not really the case at all, atleast from what I have experienced. Ive been rolling with a barbarian for the past 9 months of sessions, and I've out-damaged our spell casters by miles.

that is a problem in every edition of dnd ever not just pathfinder
at least pathfinder gives them more cool **** then "hit them really really hard"
as well as more classes that let you be a warrior that uses magic
so the problem of mages are op is still there, at least the non casters get to look cool as they die in a magical fire

pathfinder is basically an unofficial patch to 3.5e of dnd
it fixes alot of 3.5s flaws, were as 3.5 had a ******** of classes many of which did very alot of the same things, pathfinder simply had a few classes with many variations and options to pick from for each class, aswell as makeing each class more distinct with unique gimmics and such, and adding more things to remove "dead levels" from classes were you pretty much just gained health and skill points rather then getting much stronger

not necessarily simpler, more just cleaned up, it also has things that are completely unique to it, such as the summoner class which focuses on summoning spells along with a unique customizable summon,

well you get evolution points as you level up
and you only have a single one not a swarm(though i believe there is an archetype for that, which gives you multtiple weaker summons rather then one big one)
and its appearance is pretty much up to you aslong as it somewhat follows the ability you give it, if you give it claws you cant have all its limbs end in hoofs

the alchemist gets discovery as he levels up that let him do various things

basically sense unlike video games theres no code, if you think up a cool spell and the dm approves it you can use it, every edition of dnd has rule 0: whatever the dm says is law, overrules any other rules
so if theres not something that lets you do what you want, if your dm approves of it you can do it anyway
theres also a 9th level spell(9th level is highest level of spells, this one also has costly material components if i remember right) called wish, its basically a genies wish, of course if you wish for something to unreasonable(or a reasonable wish if your dms a douche) expect your dm to do what most genies do and twist the wish to **** you over. also theres some rather interesting things you can do with skills

in the lore there is a challenge people can take and if they succeed they become a god
only 3 people have succeeded everyone else died
one of these 3 did it on a dare while piss drunk and has no memory of how he did it, one of his heralds is a prostitute
just in case you decide to be a cleric so you know to be a cleric of the god of booze
