Just a project I did last night for a friend. Took about 7 hours overall in Paint and Gimp to get things right. Thought I'd post it here incase anyone wants to use it for D&D games or whatever. New maps are always good.
I'll be doing city maps of the various places eventually too, so I'll post those when I'm done.

Well, something I can contribute to... here's some old maps I have no use for anymore.

Damn. Thats actually pretty impressive. How did you make this?

This one I used GIMP.

For the coastlines I used the cloud generation method. There's a few tutorials on campaign cartographer for how to generate random terrains that look semi-realistic.

The pallet is custom made, using a gradient from white to green, with the lower desert sprayed with an airbrush, as well as the forests.

The oceans were clouds with the blacks turned dark blue, and the whites turned light blue.

The mountains are a bump map using the curves tool to isolate the whitest spots in the cloud the terrain was generated from.

The few visible rivers were just a very light ink tool on a separate layer set to darken only.

The coastline border is done by just selecting the land once you have that made, and doing an edge selection of 3-5 pixels depending on your image size. Then expanding it, and deselecting the black coastline, and making the light border around the black coastline.

The text, I want to say I rotated the entire image to get it all facing the same direction, then rotated it back. I can't remember though, that map is about 4 years old.

The compass rose I grabbed off google and altered it a bit, same with the banner, and the scale I just made from scratch.

Edits, because I'm tired...

Cartographer's Guild, not campaign cartographer.

Also, here's a tutorial that is closest to the method I used.

Personally I'd recommend maybe at least one river to go through the desert and place the southernmost desert city along the river, other than that it looks pretty cool.

I thought about that, but there's a lot of water running underground which obviously I can't show on a surface map, and thats why the desert town lies where it is as opposed to having a clear river.
User avatar #7 to #6 - satrenkotheone (12/14/2015) [-]
Well I suppose that's okay but personally I feel it wouldn't make much sense for people to settle there without any obvious water access, then again its a fantasy world so eh.

I absolutely thought logistically when placing the towns. I.e "Does this have a good natural resources: water/wood/ore/arable land". I suppose I should work on the Cities and Town maps along with the underground maps to show just why things are where too.

Yeah probably, could also give it like a miniscule oasis if you ever draw a map of the town itself, or possibly some interesting cave system that finally leads down to an underground lake or river.

I won't tell you how to do your job tho, just like discussing **** like this.

Discussion is good! It helps especially when it comes to maps because it can give ideas that I didn't think of

Mhm, I like drawing maps myself but I never really do it cuz I'm laaazy.

I'm very much the same, I only finally got around to doing this one because a friend wanted it done and wouldn't stop bugging me.

Here's one I use in my current PF campaign, though this one was upwards of 20+ hours.

Damn, sort of reminds me of a map I did with the general layout of it. Tho I did mine in paint for a friends campaign just to get a general idea of it.

I do all of mine in Paint. I used some basic editing stuff on the OP one in GImp, but I like the simplicity of Paint. Trees are a bitch tho.

Yeah I can imagine.

I have a tablet but it's so awkward to use with my desktop because its usb cable is so short.

I'd love to have a tablet or something. Most of my time making these maps is fixing **** ups because my mouse is too clumsy. Can't you get an extension cord for it so it'd reach?
User avatar #17 to #16 - satrenkotheone (12/14/2015) [-]
Yeah I'm thinking about looking up an extension cord next time I go shopping.
User avatar #18 to #17 - euskippy [OP]ONLINE (12/14/2015) [-]
Definitely worth it if it means you're getting more use out of your tablet.
User avatar #19 to #18 - satrenkotheone (12/14/2015) [-]
Yeah.

Haven't really used is much as I'd want to.

Reminds me of the Three Kingdoms.

I didn't really have anything in mind going into the project, just picked out a bunch of shapes and smoothed the edges, but I see what you mean now it's been pointed out

The font is goddamn hideous.

Which way is the wind blowing? If its blowing from west to east you are missing some serious rain shadow in the Bale province. Those mountains on the west there should be making a good part of the Bale's southern region desert or at least arid plains.
