Help a noob part 1: Encounter making
So, last night I asked my bro who is way into Pathfinder n' **** how hard it would be to make a difficult one room encounter. The deal was, I would make an encounter that would be a total of CR12 but would be possible to beat using a level 8 character and he would go in with a party of level 8 characters and check the encounter out.
Well, since I know ********* about DnD and the like, I would like some help putting together the monsters, the room, and a few strategies for going in and beating it as well as some tactics the monsters themselves would use to fight (like, a rule list describing certain strategies they follow in combat determined by their intelligence and list of skills and such.)
Now, the specific details for the encounter would be like this: Player enters with party from the south onto a half circle at the far end of the room. Lava surrounds the half circle and the only way across would be several bridges leading forward and to the side. Two bridges will lead to other parts of the southern end of the room, where there will be two hiding places on each sides of the room on the walls where the characters can't reach. These are for the first three monsters and there are other hiding spots all over the room. Going forward onto the first bridge will lead them to the first part of the encounter: three fae with themed spells of Earth, Fire, and Water wait on a small circle after the first half-circle. They need to be able to blind enemies and turn invisible so they can get to the hiding spots. The players need to either hit them before they get to the hiding spots, or destroy the spots entirely so the fae can't hide. Afterwards, they move onto another bridge towards a half-circle bigger than the first one, where two 'mini-bosses' will await. These will be a flesh-golem, Frankenstein style and a vampire, Dracula style. I don't know specifically what I want them to do, but I do know that I want them to have certain immunities and weak-spots for players to figure out and use against them. Finally, the big boss will be a Lich, level 10. I also don't know what I want to do with him.
After defeating the lich and his five henchman, the encounter ends. If all goes well with the encounter, I might make a full dungeon. If that goes well, I might flesh out the Lich character more. If that goes well, I might run a campaign where he is the villain and he levels alongside the characters.
What do you think so far? Can you help?
