My first experience:
>Play DnD
>Pick elf female
>wanted to play hardcore mode on first go around
>made con 8 (because md said min. 8 for any stat)
>Realize elf gets -2 Con
>"DM, my con is 6"
>"Why"
>"Because I can"
>Imagined very fragile female elf, Mystic Theurge (Arcane/Divine mix class) (Prestige only)
>Can't Wait for next get-together
>Never got called back again
>Cried, wanted to play DnD an awesome way.

Its actually fairly hard to apropriately signal post when the group should run away, especially in DnD or Pathfinder. In those systems, you're kinda hardwired to think of yourself as the invincible hero, that never flees nor surrenders. Hell, the Paladin is pretty much forced by the rules to think like this, or loose his/her powers.
So when a fight like this comes along, you really need to be really really explicit about the characters being ****** if they stay.
We once had a GM do this with a gargantuan lightning elemental, which at the time seemed fairly threatening but then a handful of levels later, we easily destroyed a gargantuan fire elemental, just because we wanted to build our doom-fortress on the vulcano it was occupying. DnD/Pathfinder is wierd...
