First DnD Adventure

dungeons-n-drags
So I had my first DnD session last night. I've seen a lot of the stories and green texts and it seemed like a lot of fun, but could never get a group together to do it.
Well I and my 2 friends, both who have never played before either, finally had a day we were all off with 2 other friends of ours who play a lot.
Friend 1, one of the guys that plays a lot, rolled a human paladin. Tenar, she praises Pelor, and paints paintings of him everyday to donate to local churches.
Friend 2 rolled Nikolaus the human rogue, proficient in bows and arrows, attacks from a distance.
Friend 3, rolled a half-elf paladin. Festivius Wonderbottom, of the Wonderbottoms, long line of knights. If anybody's played Dark Souls, he praises the sun. To the point of trying to get the DM to allow a plastic visor built into his helmet so he can stare into the sun.
Friend 4 is the DM.
I also rolled a tiefling rogue, Iarai the skill monkey. Pick ALL the locks! Pickpocket ALL the NPCs!
Yes. 2 rogues, 2 paladins.
We're going to die.
Festivius's player and I both work at a movie theater, and we're playing in the cafe there. When he gets a moment, he comes back and talks with us about his character, and where he is while we're actually starting.
We're all contracted to help a medium sized village to take care of a goblin problem. Festivius isn't here yet, so we have his character is riding a purple donkey with a purple carrot glued to its head. Also has glitter and a tattoo tramp stamp of Pelor on it's ass. Named TwilightSparkle. He is still an hour out of town. Later, we learn that under the weight of his full plate armor, he crushed the poor thing about a mile out.
Introductions are made in the inn. Drinks on the mayor.
Once Festivius shows up, we speak with the mayor again, sign the contracts to take care of the problem and get paid. The mayor also mentions that one of the rich people in town is offering a bonus. His son had been one of the adventurers to go out before us to take care of the goblins, and has not returned. He wanted to know what became of him.
We retire to the inn for the day, while preparations for our travels are made by the mayor.
I was also in town for another reason. I was on a job to steal a jewel that was owned by previously mentioned rich person side quest NPC (SQNPC). The jewel is supposedly in a ring.
I hit up a guy in the inn to learn where I can find him. I bluff and tell him I'm looking for more information about his missing son.
He replies with "Money talks, and so does my stomach." I pay for the nicest food the inn has, he gives me what I want to know and I ask if I can count on him for more information in the future. I can, as long as I continue buying him food.
I go to leave the inn, and 3 of us were made to do spot checks. I, Festivius, who was outside the inn staring at a statue of Pelor, and Nikolaus. Tenar is inside eating so no check was made. Not entirely sure why DM had Niko roll, as he was inside too.
Niko and I passed the rolls, Festivius rolled a Nat 1. He stares intently at the fine details of the statue, oblivious to the world.
We see a man, visibly angry, dragging a cart up to the mayors office, cart covered by a tarp.
After a few listen and spot checks later, the man goes inside, and Niko and I look under the tarp to find a dead cow, punctured. I fail the spot check to find out more, but Niko realizes that the wounds were made by too fine of weapons to have been done by goblins.
Feeling it was none of my concern, and Niko didn't share his information with me anyway, I left the cow to retire for the day.
Niko opted to try to listen in on the conversation between the man and the mayor, who were now inside. Niko heard no voices on the first floor. When he tried to climb up the side of the building to reach the 2nd floor, he didn't make it more than a foot off the ground before falling back down. Defeated, he also returned to the inn.
We called it a night, and went to bed. There were 2 rooms, and 4 of us. Tenar was a female, so she got a room all to herself. Niko stayed out in the hallway while Festivius and I took the room.
Iarai doesn't like paladins. I contemplated stabbing him in his sleep, but decided against it. After waiting until late, close to 3 am, I make my sneak checks against both Festivius, who was dead to the world with a roll of 3, and Niko, who was in the hallway.
I make my way to the house of the SQNPC. I go to the back door, and successfully pick the lock. Tieflings get darkvision, so I can see the inside clearly despite the lack of light. I hear no voices on the first floor, and make my sneak checks to get all the way up the stairs.
I see 3 doors in the hallway, before the hallway turns to the left.
I check the first door, and find the bathroom.
I check the second door, and find the master bedroom, with both the SQNPC and his wife asleep in bed. I make checks to get to the side of the bed, and check to see if the man is wearing the ring. Making all my checks, except spot, I don't wake the man as I lift the blanket to see it's on his hand under the blanket. Thankfully he was clothed.
I make a search check on the dressers and find a jewelry box. Seeing only what's on the top, there's 2 gold bars, a bag that makes a clinking sound, and 300 gold coins. I pocket the box and decide it's best to cut my losses for now. As I leave the room, I step on a creaky board right at the door, and stir SQNPC. Thinking over my options, I opt to leave the room and sneak to the 3rd room, which happens to be his study. I hide behind the door, and listen.
I wait as he also steps on the creaky board and goes to the bathroom. I look across the room to the window, and dwell on the merits of dropping out the window. Figuring it'd be best not to test my luck, as it may very well kill me, I sit and wait until he goes back to bed.
I make my sneak checks all the way out the house, and barely manage to lock the lock again. (1 less point and the lock would've broke)
Meanwhile, Festivius and mumbling in his sleep, and shouts "PELOR!"
He wakes both Niko and Tenar. Tenar, hearing nothing more, figured it was nothing and went back to bed.
I got back to the inn, and made no attempt to sneak back. Niko didn't go back to sleep, and met me in the hallway. Asking where I had been, I make my bluff check and say I was looking for the bathroom. He tried to spot if my bag looked heavier, but failed. Having nothing further to say, I walked past him and examined my spoils.
2 gold bars, valued at 1 platinum each.
1 bag of assorted gems, valued at 100 gold.
300 gold coins.
2 rolls of paper, deeds to his home and land. Made out in his name
I checked to see if there was a false bottom, but found none.
At level 1, I successfully stole from the wealthiest person in town, didn't get caught, and didn't kill anybody. Something the DM told me he's never seen out of a level 1 before.
Morning came, the paladins went to do their morning prayer. Tenar's prayer included donating the painting she had painted the night before. For Festivius, this involved polishing his armor, to better reflect the sun. A few hours later I awoke and got some breakfast, Niko was already eating.
We prepared our equipment, a warhammer for Tenar, greatsword for Festivius, with longsword and shield as backup, a bow and arrow for Niko, with an ice pick for backup, and I, with a pair of daggers and a fortune.
We're traveling the road and we notice an abandoned barn about 20 feet off the road. Niko makes a spot check to notice movement through the open door. We tie our horses to a nearby tree and move to investigate. Tenar on the left, Festivius on the right, I in the center, slightly behind them, and Niko further back, all weapons drawn. Niko notices a boot sticking out behind the barn door. Tenar calls out for whoever is there to come out, with no response. Tenar peeks around the door. Goblin.
The goblin screams as it strikes down on Tenar, and 2 more goblins jump out on Festivius's side. I won intiatiate and took aim on a goblin by Festivius. I threw 1 of my daggers and crit it in the neck, dead. Tenar swung her warhammer and destroys the goblin in front of her. Festivius swings his greatsword, and misses horribly, twice. The goblin moved to attack next. I moved to intercept and tried to kill it before it could act. Unfortunately, I also missed. The goblin changed it's target and now opted to attack me, but missed as well. Niko took aim, and shot the goblin dead in the heart.
I retrieved my dagger from the first goblin and we searched the barn, finding more dead goblins, with wounds similar to the cow from yesterday. I make a spot check and find an extra gold coin the others missed. Finding nothing more noteworthy, we returned to our horses and continued on. We made it to a ravine, our destination at the bottom. We noticed that there were campfires around the ravine, someone had been trying to hide them. Festivius noticed a rope going down the ravine, and upon further inspection I saw there were handholds and footholds carved into the rock.
It had gotten late, so this is where we stopped. This is the first of our campaign, I'll post more when we continue.
I find it hilarious now that I was told my character would be useless, and Festivius is our version of Hodor.
