THE DARK SIX

"As is the world, so are the gods. As are the gods, so is the world."

This ancient saying is one that those among the Sovereign Host would rather forget. It implies that the gods are not superbly holy beings with no faults, but rather a reflection of the world, and in turn the world is a reflection of them. Those who understand this know that the darker parts of the world too reflect in the gods. Those who reflect these darker parts of the world are known as the Dark Six, so called by the vassals of the Sovereign Host. Originally, many members of the Dark Six were originally part of the same pantheon as the Sovereign Host, but for various reasons including the Devourer's raping of his sister Arawai, they were cast from the Host and assigned new names that inspired fear and revulsion in an effort to keep the mortal races from worshipping them as they once had. Like many creatures in the Ebberon setting, the Dark Six are not evil for the sake of being evil. Rather, they have specific factors and methods that are percieved as evil by the common man, but are not necessarily so.

The Devourer

Shurkaan, now known as The Devourer is known as the Sovereign of Wave and Whelm. Like his sister, Arawai, he embodies nature, however unlike his sister he embodies the violent and destructive sides of nature. Tsunamis, tornados, volcanos and all forms of natural disaster are his domain. The Devourer also presides over the deep oceans, and ocean waves belong solely to him. His portfolio includes devestation and storms, and his faithful often quest to either prevent or create 'natural' disasters.

The Fury

The Fury, formerly known as Szorawai, is the Sovereign of Rage and Ruin. She is the daughter of Arawai and The Devourer, and like her father, she embodies an extreme. While her father presides over the extreme and destructive parts of nature, The Fury likewise rules over the extreme and destructive parts of emotion. She is the goddess of anger, revenge and insanity, and her followers follow suit. The Fury remains as a warning to all the good peoples of Ebberon that while being sloth is a waste of life, unbridled passion can be even more terrifying.

The Keeper

Kol Turrant lost that name during the schism, when he was cast from the Sovereign Host by Dol Dorn and from his family who remains there. Now he is known as The Keeper, and he is the Sovereign of Death and Decay. To those vassals of the Sovereign Host, The Keeper is nothing but the opposite of is brother, Kol Korran. They believe that the Keeper is gluttonous and greedy, where Kol Korran doesn't squander his wealth and is generous. The disciples of the Dark Six, however, correctly recognize his place in the afterlife. Among the disciples, he is known to ferry the dead into the afterlife, and while all deities have a vote on what happens to a soul once its body has died, The Keeper's vote is by far the most important.

The Mockery

The Mockery once was part of a trio of militant gods and siblings, along with Dol Dorn and Dol Arrah. In those days, he was known as Dol Azur, but those days are long past. Now he is known as the Sovereign of Betrayal and Bloodshed, and he represents the darker sides of warfare. All dishonorable acts of battle are his domain, assassinations, unjust war, dishonorable tactics and the like are within his domain. With a portfolio that includes murder and treachery, it is little surprise that would-be priests of the Mockery are required to bring to ruin someone close to them as initiation.

The Shadow

The Shadow is a literal shadow, cast off by Aureon to rid himself of the evil in his soul. However, it is not such an easy task to remove evil from a god's own soul. The Shadow is known as the Sovereign of Magic and Mayhem for good reason, for he embodies ambition and corruption. His followers often are evil spellcasters, and seek to unleash ancient and forbidden magical horrors upon the world in search of power. The Shadow directly is responsible for the creation of the Medusa in Ebberon, and is thought to be responsible for the creation of many of the other monster races. Ancient legends say that were Aureon and The Shadow to be reunited, the age of civilized peoples would come to an end.

The Traveler

The Traveler is known as the Sovereign of Chaos and Change. He-if the Traveler truely is a he-is by far the most mysterious deity not only in the Dark Six, but within all of Ebberon. He has no relations to any of the other deities, and is the only deity of which physical evidence exist, for the Traveler walks the face of Ebberon in body as well as in spirit. Unlike the other members of the Dark Six, the Traveler is not an innately evil deity. Instead, he is an agent of change, so much so that even those who meet him do not recognize that they have, for he is constantly changing. The vassals of the Sovereign Host fear this chaos, and fear the change he may bring to their faith, and so they brand him one of the Dark Six, and call him an evil god.

But is the willingness to embrace new ideas truly an evil thing?

The Mockery sounds like a pretty sweet god.
