Quick way is to give your character very specific quirks. For monks, a vow of celibacy is always fun, vow of truth will screw over any kind of secret mission, and so on. There are many specific (over-the-top) quirks you can give your character which can help immersion in my experience.
Also it's important to remember that you shouldn't focus on making the STRONGEST character, but rather the most fun to play character. Give yourself really obvious or weird weaknesses, it'll make the game more fun

My rp experience is only on games, but if you're gonna rp as something or someone i guess you have to be, react and feel like the character you are.

create a chracter so opposed to who you naturally are and just go all out on being that person. im playing a russian elf bike ganger in shadowrun and my gm told me to get into character and be over the top compulsive and angry at everything

As the others have stated, you could try adding music and things that give off ambiance.

There are rpg based scented oils made by black phoenix alchemy lab; which you can also find on Thinkgeek.

Midnight Syndicate made a D&D roleplaying soundtrack during the D&D 3rd ed. (2003)

or you could try Nox Arcana's Blood of the Dragon album. It's only $10.

If you really want to spice things up, try to do short LARP interactions during non-combat sections with props such as tarot cards, glass orbs, colored drinks(potions/poisons), cooking food, etc. You don't have to get expensive with it.

Perhaps you could use legos for D&D? Gives a versatile ability for custom rooms.

>>#5, >>#2, >>#8,

Think as the character would, as well. Just because you know which answer is the right one doesn't mean they do. get into the character's head and track their reasoning for things.
Look for things to do outside of battle, and look for creative things to do in battle. There's more than just the ability to attack.
if you're a caster, look for new and unique ways to use your spells.

Add music. Make Npc encounters in advance and work on different voices. Make some ambiance like incense. These little things can make a HUGE difference in your games.

Don't be afraid to go a bit over the top, throwing a curve ball at the DM just makes things more interesting, see what you can push and what will be pushed back. If they want their story to go a certain way they will compensate and you know to push much harder!

A world where crit 20s defy logic is a good world

flesh out a full back story, down to how that person behaves, reacts, and play pretend like you were a little kid again. 2 hour in game discussion on rope quality is the goal here.

I listen to a podcast called "Critical Hit" where they play DnD. They do mail bag episodes where they answer questions from other DnD players. This question is broached many times on the show and should be listened to for best responses. One idea that they had was to get experience from situations where they role play really well.
