I feel like if I hadn't developed such a bitter opinion on him in the beginning, I would have absolutely no problem with him in the later season.
But I just couldn't. He was one of those characters that really got to me.
User avatar #50 to #46 - smilinganon (08/18/2013) [-]
I can understand that. I've felt the same for a few characters over various anime, tv, movies, etc. Everyone has those characters they just can't get into I suppose.

To be honest, I've only just gotten up to the uh.. Cybermen Part 2 bit of Season 2.. And honestly, I can't watch it anymore.. Mickey is an idiot, and Rose is a stupid airhead.. I keep asking myself the same question over and over: How have they not both been killed off yet? When the Doctor says 'don't do x' maybe you should listen to the ******* lord of time instead of doing the complete opposite >.>

Well, that's my rant done.
User avatar #53 to #5 - sinonyx (08/18/2013) [-]
no companion has ever not wondered off
and the doctor likes it that way really

the doctor wouldn't like someone who just takes orders, he wants someone who isn't afraid to go explore a completely unknown place.. plus, quite a few times if one of his companions hadn't gone off, then they would've had less of a chance of figureing out what was going on
User avatar #47 to #5 - BigDoktor ONLINE (08/18/2013) [-]
I almost felt the same way, but the last episode of series 2 solidified me as a fan. The rest of the show gets better (with a few exceptions)
#9 to #5 - rollricked (08/18/2013) [-]
Season 3 is better. Season one was cringe inducing most of the time, season two is only a little better, season 3 is where it starts getting good. I had the same problem when first getting into Doctor Who. The Universe and doctor are interesting, but he keeps the dumbest ******* company possible... at first.

When people ask me where to start getting in to Doctor Who, I usually tell them to start at Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Unless they're willing to push through the awful at the beginning, in which case they should start at the top of the new series. But hey, I watched it straight through, and I love Doctor Who!!
User avatar #20 to #3 - nexuser (08/18/2013) [-]
No way, the first half of the series is great too, how can you say that?
User avatar #28 to #20 - snowshark (08/18/2013) [-]
A newcomer to the series is going to see in quick succession:

Evil plastic where people are eaten by wheelie bins and shop mannequins have guns in their hands.

Evil skin with no brain stretched out on a rack and the decidedly gruesome deaths of one woman being burned alive and another (if you can call that a woman) exploding.

Farting aliens inside the skins of fat people? Two episodes of that, don't forget.

You get four really ***************** episodes one after the other with few redeeming features that do not reflect the series as it's best.

Granted, the Unquiet dead and Dalek are pretty good but still not as good an opening to the series as one of the episodes penned by Moffat. Blink, The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library. All of these are great introductions to the series that show the best of Dr. Who.

I'd not say introduce them to Smith first though. He's a brilliant doctor but when Moffat took over completely his understanding of what made the series as good as it was allowed him to create very coherent plots that moved from one point to the other with very few weak episodes in the run, however that makes the series a little harder to get into as you don't get everything in one go like with his other episodes. The less self-contained nature of the continuous plot-threads was a real cock-tease and new viewers will be left confused (especially if they get into the Impossible astronaut where, as has been reposted many times, the wife conundrum really piles up.)

They were entertaining as episodes though. Fathers day was my favourite from Series 1, with the Slitheen double and the long game being up there. Yes, the beginning few aren't as good, but I mean, it starting the revamped Doctor Who and it made a good starting. But you know, opinions and the internet don't go hand in hand, so here, have this pic

The thing is that a lot of people confuse just where facts end and opinion begins. Simply liking something doesn't make it good nor does it make it a good example of what the series is best at. I'm not saying you or anyone else shouldn't like the stuff Davies wrote, even if I personally have great disdain for much of it, but the context of this scenario is that someone new is seeing Dr. Who for the first time so you want to lead with your best foot forwards, i.e. the best episode you can get your hands on.

The Empty Child was the intro of Cpt. Jack as well as being one of the funnier and creepier of the episodes whilst also being set in the past and in a very immersive location in the past. It draws upon a lot of things that people are familiar with and are entertained by rather than throwing ideas at the wall and seeing if they work. They may or may not like all the episodes penned by Davies but that doesn't matter until they've seen what the series does best. After that you can go to the more audience-splitting content.

It's not about which you like best, rather which is the best example of what makes the series good.

I really liked Mickey on series 28 (or 2 as you may count them). But yeah, that first storie was baaaad. The plot of Rose uncovering the Doctor was very good but the adventure bit could have stood to be cut.
