Already commented something like this, but a large slice of the new DW fans ultimately would turn off if an older actor became the Doctor simply because said "fans" seem to get off being able to cream over a younger doctor. SHRUG. The doctor is the doctor, same character, no matter the actor.

It doesn't help that whenever someone asks "where should I start" most replies, apparently having no idea of the very basic premise of the show, tell them to start with the 2005 series.

It's practically an anthology series, it doesn't even matter where you start.

Well... You must admit it's a tad overwhelming when you first hear about it.
The sheer number of episodes, and all the continuity it's built up over years.
So we tell them to start with the Eccleston episodes because they're the most accessible to a modern audience.
I'm about halfway through Tom Baker, and I've loved every second of the whole series thus far, and starting with the newer series definitely got me hooked enough to start watching the classics.

But hey, maybe that's just the mentality of us in the 25%.
The older stuff (while great) is very much a product of it's time, and just might not gel with casual fans.

When I'm done with the 10th Doctor I promise I'll watch the classic series.

I would love to watch the older ones, quite a few are even on Netflix; rather convenient for me. But they don't have subtitles, and I'm fairly hard of hearing especially with accents so I really can't.

I had heard stories as a kid about this great show, Doctor Who. I was a child then, the internet wasn't really an option.

As an Adult I found the Doctor Who reboot, and fell in love. I thought the first doctor was..okay..but I absolutely loved the show, and it was all that my parents had built up(even though they don't enjoy it.)

Now, after finishing all of the episodes out, I look far and wide for the old series, and depressingly cannot find them. The few sites that have any episodes, are missing large chunks, or are just in unbearably bad quality. No sound, No video, or chunks of the episode missing...

It's not a huge surprise to know that so few have only seen the new series, I'm a fan who's actively tried to watch the old series, only to be denied.

How is that..bad? exactly? The Original Who is not easy to find...and you don't need to watch the original who to get the story..

Once I get caught up with the current series, I'll look back at the beginning. I've heard that 1-9 is great.

You could start at the newer series, 2005, but you could also watch the classics first. I started at 2005 for the first time but now i'm thinking about downloading the old ones. Don't start in season 2 of the newer series because even though the 10th doctor is awesome you shouldn't miss the 9th.
