I have a better idea. How about the torch "disappears" right in front of the last stage, and people pretend to get a spare one. So the opening ceremony starts and then smoke rises and the lights go out. Suddenly, there's the Tardis. Matt Smith walks out, with the torch. "I got this", walks up, and light the flame.
