My best guess.
Program on camera analyzes the picture and draws another picture over a an area where a spesific patern is present.

Reminds me of augmented reality.. though it's just as nimba said, clever recognition software. there's lots of cool augmented reality stuff. google glass is one of them, but it really doesn't live up to the potential of that technology if you ask me.

Truth be told they found out that pluto is just part of a really large astroid field that even had other astroids even larger than it, there fore being unable to be a planet, it was a little too small to begin with.

But-
Imagine Google Glass + Pokemon.
You could make a mat like this, that can give enchanced reality coverage, google glass voice controls, and Pokemon game.
We could have real pokemon battles in a few years.
