A couple of friends and I host a weekly DnD session through roll20 and we have weekly guests. We also stream our sessions if anyone is interested in watching. We have it every Saturday if anyone is interested.

I haven't played D&D since middle school so this is an honest question. Do people ever do serious games? All of the stories of people's campaigns on here just kill all of the interest I have of getting back into the game because dick jokes just aren't that funny to me anymore. I'm old.

I am actually thinking about doing something with D&D for my dissertation but the prospect looks grim if funyjunk is an indicator of what my experience would be like.

Somebody should do this for vampire the masquerade and the world of darkness. The games are the **** , but I feel like I would enjoy the freedom of actually doing the pen and paper game.

Depends what you're playing, I like D&D 3.5 myself.
Pretty much everything is roll a 20 sided dice. Thats about all there is to it, make a character (theres plenty of help in the "Players Handbook") then in most circumstances in the game, you decide what you want to do, roll a 20 sided dice, add any extra bits to it you get from your character stats and the Dungeon Master will tell you what happens.

Thats about it for absolute basics. See if you can get a copy of the "Players Handbook" and the "Dungeon Master's Guide". Those two books will basically tell you everything you need to play a basic game.

I feel that is unfair. You do need to read one or two short, illustrated books. The players handbook, and maybe the dungeon masters guide, although you don't need it to be a player. After that, all you need is an understanding group willing to teach and bear with you, and you're good as gold. This game can be very accessible.

Thank you so much - I've been wanting to try playing D&D - when my work load lets up a bit, I'll definitely check it out.

My roommate one year tried to get me into it a few years back but I just didn't have the time. He ran me through a very short story and dungeon just to get a feel for it. Long story short, I was a very clumsy dwarf.

"OK, I just need to pass this deliberately easy stealth roll." *rolls a 3 - fails*
"Oh hey, that looks like a boss, so I'll use my daily power." *rolls a 1 - critical fail*

I've had a game where the rogue was only useful when he was off by himself. We had one fight where he rolled **** and cut the sword hand off of our NPC captain. This threw the captain off balance and the alligator we were fighting bit his face off.

The rogue then went scouting, killed three bandits by himself without taking damage and then found a jewel encrusted spyglass, worth about 15,000 gold.
