superman should be colorful

VideoLab attempts to turn back time and restore the natural color & brightness in shots from DC's Man of Steel. Turns out there was a beautiful Zack Snyder movie hiding underneath the bleak coloring.

Would Man of Steel have been more successful at the box office if it wasn't colored like Schindler's List? What do you think?

LEGAL NOTE: All © & ™ footage belonging to Legendary Pictures, CBS, Warner Bros. Pictures, Columbia-EMI-Warner, & DC Entertainment is included as a criticism/commentary on filmmaking techniques and has not been reproduced for direct consumption.

PRODUCTION NOTE: We're big fans of both Superman and the film Man of Steel. That's why this was a fun project. But Superman isn't just a brand. He's a worldwide icon that has lasted 77 years. When you make a Superman movie, and not every kid running out of the theater wishes they were Superman... you've done something wrong. We're simply asking questions.

WORKFLOW: (For the curious) The results we achieved are obviously a bit oversaturated and contain contrast artifacts. Since our source footage already contained severe color-grading decisions, it was far from optimal and, at best, this is an approximation. If the raw footage had been colored in a more natural and pleasing manner, it would actually look SIGNIFICANTLY better than what you see here.

Synthetic Aperture's Color Finesse and some color exclusion adjustments did most of the heavy lifting in our color correction and re-grade, but each clip required a cocktail of secondary corrections.

We did, in fact, put too much green in the savanna, brought to our attention by eagle-eyed commenters.

The orange-tinted sky in the Metropolis aftermath shots and the purple girders behind Zod were actually there naturally. We believe Man of Steel had a more traditional-looking color grade until later in post-production when they decided to go darker. They should have followed their first instinct.

They darken the original footage so thier videos would look ten times better

because it's gray. it all looks good in terms of quality and such but there's a lack of color.
>I can let krypoton go because it's alien and metallic, I don't like the adaptation of the race but to each there own.
>but when you go to earth it should have color, the opening scene with Clark one afternoon, the sun is up it should be a vibrant mix of reds and yellows with grass poping with contrast as green but it's not it's all blinded together to be similar shade of different colors.
>the oil rig it's broad daylight with fire every where there should be no shadows there but every thing is half hidden.
they seem to have wanted to have it dark so that the light really poped but it didn't really work because for white light to stand out you need darkness, blackness. instead what they had was just gray and then a slight lighter gray
even nostalgia critic said something about it ( think I remember hearing it somewere but don't remember exactly) www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1AJyKJ4BCo

Turns out they darkened some of the shots to make the re-colour look more impactful
.It definitely wasn't as grey as they made it look in the video.

Compression can really degrade video color.
You have to compress your source of the footage twice (once to encode it, once to upload it), and we don't even know how compressed their source was.
User avatar #53 to #40 - theesovietjason (04/24/2015) [-]
Yea but it seems unlikely that they'd start with a really compressed version and work with that. Especially if they were trying to edit it and then upload it. Both picture compare different video sources (vlc and youtube) and it's easy to see that the supposed original doesn't look the same as other originals
#76 to #53 - anon (04/25/2015) [-]
It's not a choice, it's impossible to reupload to Youtube without compressing it twice.
Of course it's not going to look the same as Youtube footage.
User avatar #78 to #76 - theesovietjason (04/25/2015) [-]
well if they know that then they know that it was misleading, you cant just play it off. Their original is noticeably different to the actual original
#32 to #17 - skelebones (04/24/2015) [-]
That could just be more individual brightness settings and not the settings on the film itself.
#33 to #32 - theesovietjason (04/24/2015) [-]
Whatever it is they clearly did something to make the 'restored colour' look that much better
#35 to #33 - skelebones (04/24/2015) [-]
or maybe your comparing dvd to bluray?
User avatar #36 to #35 - theesovietjason (04/24/2015) [-]
It wasn't me that got the pictures, and I think the people who made the original would've used the best quality video to enhance. Plus the first picture I linked was two youtube videos so the blu-ray thing makes no sense.
#37 to #36 - skelebones (04/24/2015) [-]
idk man i was just spitballing. i mean i hate jumping to conclusions like that "oh durr they wanted a more dramatic effect so they changed it.
User avatar #52 to #37 - theesovietjason (04/24/2015) [-]
I mean that's fair, but look how quickly everyone was saying how stupidly grey it looked. The people using the footage for Youtube obviously have something to gain out of it but showing its not that grey doesn't really benefit anyone imo

Even though the color is pretty. I honestly liked the toned down color on man of steel. It adds a layer of realism (in my opinion) to movies. I like visually pleasing color, but I think that Superman is a really bright character (which I see lots of people saying) but I think a muted color scheme was more appropriate. Clouds don't look gorgeously blue all the time, fields arent always lusciously green, people don't always have perfect complexions. I think they saw how much color was actually in the movie and while visually stunning, it may have been a little too bright and didn't want it to look like someone vomited a rainbow. I may not be a comic book guru, but I honestly liked the movie plenty, it was no dark knight, but it was still a good movie. It just couldn't live up to the hype of Nolan's Batman.
User avatar #58 to #57 - marno (04/25/2015) [-]
>realism
>desaturation

You know real people see in color right?
User avatar #62 to #58 - ultimatebuttercup (04/25/2015) [-]
Yeah, but movies often over portray the amount of color that makes it too bright, enough to where its distracting. Man of steel may have gone a BIT overboard in desaturating the color, but I like a dark navy blue with a crimson cape. A bright baby blue with a bright red may be closer to the actual comic book superman, but it just looks weird to me, everytime. This little video doesn't show the whole movie, some scenes may be downright weird to see with all that color. I think it was a risk they took to try and redefine Superman, one that most likely failed. I really like the idea that they tried it, Superman has always kind of been a detached paragon above the rest of humanity, and his colors kind of made him always stand out (which he should). But I like that in his suit he looks more like other people around him with these colors than he does out of the comics or cartoons. He is always the boy scout and he always seems so perfect and lacks a gritty realism. I think it was interesting, but what do I know about Superman? Nothing.
User avatar #5 - daragon (04/24/2015) [-]
And now I'm just sitting here wishing they would remake a good superman that isn't some dark edgy teenagers idea of super man. Man of steel might have been worth watching is it wasn't so ******* gray and boring looking
User avatar #6 to #5 - ScottP (04/24/2015) [-]
Superman has been dark since the 90's, and especially during the New 52 reboot which they were going off of
User avatar #8 to #6 - daragon (04/24/2015) [-]
He just doesn't seem like a good dark character to me., he always seemed like the superhero for five year olds, a stupidly overpowered boy scout... Not really the kinda gritty dark almost anti-hero kind of protagonist that batman can be.
#44 to #8 - angelious (04/24/2015) [-]
yh. i always found batman to be the one..i mean he is all that "dark and edgy" look that is popular with kids these days
User avatar #9 to #8 - ScottP (04/24/2015) [-]
I guess, but compared to most people that he fights, he's not really overpowered since they tend to be more powerful than he is. And in recent iterations, he's not as much of a boy scout as before. He engages against the US government on issues that he has, and when the military tries to fight him, he fights back.
User avatar #10 to #9 - daragon (04/24/2015) [-]
I guess, but he'll never lose that boy scout thing in my eyes. It will always just seem like they are trying to force him into a role he wasn't supposed to be in.
User avatar #43 to #6 - angelious (04/24/2015) [-]
not really...sure he has gotten darker and grittier like rest of the genre.

but he still represent the ultimate boy scout, hope and ideal of justice freedom and so on.
#15 - DrollHumor ONLINE (04/24/2015) [-]
That's very true. Superman and Batman are opposites, which is why they work beautifully together.

Superman gets power from the sun, he is literally the day to Batman's night.

Dark and gritty is Bats territory. Supes should keep his head in the clouds and blue sky.
User avatar #56 to #15 - hejhag (04/25/2015) [-]
Man of Steel wasn't really "Dark and gritty" It just took itself seriously and showed real consequences.

I'm not sure why precisely, but for some reason it just felt boring to me. Somehow, even with the flying around and explosions, I was not amused, which was particularly weird for me because that's usually what I love most in superhero movies.

Cause the characters had no personalities, the product placement was ridiculous, the color-grading and cinematography was bland at best and the story was uninteresting

cause people imagine superman as a vegan ghandi (minus the nuke) incarnate passive, who has never even chip a small building during his time in metropolis, and all his battle takes place in an isolated place like the desert

Personally I like the washed out look, there's a time and place for colour, and I didn't think this movie needed it.
#28 - fjadventureman (04/24/2015) [-]
The story was dark. That aesthetic would have been great if it were a typical superman movie, but they didn't just tack it on post-production, darkness was in the film's dna. I would have enjoyed a brighter feel and brighter colors, but not a dark film with an out-of-place bright color scheme.
#12 - inmatedred (04/24/2015) [-]
That's why I love and hate the Chris Nolan Dark Knight films. They were great and well done but, DC after that keeps trying to head in a dark and gritty direction. It's not working as well.
User avatar #20 to #12 - guardianatreyu (04/24/2015) [-]
Great and well done my ass. Everyone forgets about the first movie, the second only did well because of Joker, and the third is just an absolute mess of a film.

I have to agree. The last two are decently entertaining action flicks, but they're far from Batman movies
User avatar #29 to #23 - guardianatreyu (04/24/2015) [-]
I don't even think they're even decent action flicks. I don't remember any actual good fight scenes in those movies. Every time there was a fight it was either shaken up and blurred with the **** camerawork. Or just stupid unrealistic or unconvincing short "fight scenes.
User avatar #30 to #29 - Kairyuka (04/24/2015) [-]
I was thinking more about the big action (car chases, explosions n **** ) and I remember being decently entertained, but on the other hand I don't really remember any of it as being good. I watched the second one right after playing both Batman: Arkham City and Arkham Asylum and I was so disappointed. The Arkham games are pretty much the best modern representation of Batman beyond the comics
User avatar #31 to #29 - Kairyuka (04/24/2015) [-]
Oh and don't even get me started on Hollywood fight scenes. They could learn a lot from people like Jackie Chan
User avatar #41 - darrenblackfox (04/24/2015) [-]
DC needs to go in a different direction. The Dark Knight films were good, but they weren't a great representation of who Batman is. Yeah, they got the symbol aspect right, but Bruce Wayne as a person? He's supposed to be a lot more together than that, even at the beginning. Bruce Wayne was too much of a pussy.

The whole point of Batman is to bring justice to stop things like what happened to his parents, not to end up with the girl. Yet in Returns, he has a freaking emotional episode when Alfred tells him about the letter. It was Spider-Man 3 all over again. Angsty superhero doesn't get the girl so he gets depressed. Batman is SUPPOSED to be solitary. He's supposed to be stoic. Not a pansy.

Then they tried the same "dark" idea with the friendliest, most American superhero DC has, and they end up missing out on the core aspects that we love about these characters. Ben Affleck better show a more stoic Batman. I am hopeful about the line "do you bleed". Seems like the gritty Batman I have been hoping for.

A lot of the scenes look better in color, but some of them (like Zod in the construction building) look a little too much like an Instagram filter was put on them

They're just trying to make all comics a little darker (in theme not color) so it appeals to a wider audience.
One of the techniques for this is to pull "warm" colours from scenes to make it apear more serious, grittier.
#74 - keybladewarrior (04/25/2015) [-]
It may be my love and enjoyment of the "Dark Knight" movies that made me watch the "Man of Steel." The beginning bit was quite boring looking. Mostly due to it's color. However, I feel it gave the movie that tone of "realism". I know realism about a guy in a red and blue leotart farfetched but the Dark Knight and Man of Steel work that way.
