For all you guys suddenly thinking 'I WANT A WOLF!!!' Look up wolfdogs. They are wolves bred with German shepherds and are as easy to train as a dog, but look just like wolves.

MFW people think getting a wolf would be a good idea.

one of my dad's friends has a pet timber wolf. he found it as a puppy next to its mother's corpse (hit by a car). it barely had its eyes open so he figured "what the hell" and brought it home. ive met him (the wolf) and he's one of the nicest animals ive ever met, it;s really un-nerving when he looks at you, but he's nicer than some dogs ive met.

It's okay to have them as pets as long as you have more than one. They have pack mentalities and one simply must be the alpha. If you only have one, it will try to assert itself over you.

not at all, my family own's quite a few wolf breeds and regular dog's like labs and just mutts. If anything the wolf are larger and stronger, but we have never had a problem with them.
#22 to #19 - memenoob (09/07/2014) [-]
Dogs have been domesticated over thousands of years to be tame and fit into a human society. The only way you can really have a pet wolf is if it recognizes you as the pack leader, and you assert dominance, however that doesn't mean you can treat it like a dog. Just because it respects you doesn't mean it won't flip **** and go on a murder spree when you take it for a walk.
#23 to #22 - doctersmiles (09/07/2014) [-]
as much as i want to say your right, i can guaranty that the dogs and wolf i walk without a leash are tame and not at all bloodthirsty. This is i feel, one of those pitbull scared.
#24 to #23 - memenoob (09/07/2014) [-]
I'm not saying they're all bloodthirsty, ravaging killers either, and I'm not saying it is unsafe to own them as pets. But you know as well as I do wolves are not dogs, and can't be treated as such. If you own wolves, and you make them understand you are the alpha leader of the pack, they will respect you and you only, and it isn't guarenteed they won't attack other humans just because they don't attack you. Now I know the same can happen with a dog, where they can attack a human upon fear or some other factor, but when a wolf pet sees you, they identify you as their leader, when they see a DIFFERENT human they may identify them as a competitor to their land or food sources, a dog won't.
#27 to #24 - doctersmiles (09/07/2014) [-]
have you ever owned a wolf or been around someone who has, just out of curiosity of where you get your knowledge? My grand mom has like 4 wolfs a goldlab, a little pug, and a mut she found as a stray. Each one of them are very sweet, except the wolfs like to sit around and be still. instead of running about the back yard like children.
#29 to #27 - memenoob (09/07/2014) [-]
My uncle owns 3 of them, and he's the only one that he allows to make physical contact with. They know my face since I'm around a lot and don't really attack me, but they are aggressive about it and make it clear I should keep my distance. It's obvious they're protective of my uncle, as they hang around him as if they're protecting him when I'm near.
#31 to #29 - doctersmiles (09/07/2014) [-]
that sounds pretty badass. well my gandmum is a sweet old lady and the wolfs at her place pretty much have that cat like attitude with family members and they just lay about and let you pet them with a fuss. But they they are guard dogs and will bark at the door when people knock, like most dogs do. i think what most people do is they train dogs like dogs but when they train wolfs like wolfs and they are raised with the attitude of "you are my alpha leader i will bark and bite anyone in reach." and then that is how they are.
#32 to #31 - memenoob (09/07/2014) [-]
My uncle is a 240 lb 6'3" ex-marine, so it was pretty easy to assert dominance, lol. I guess it's possible that your grandmothers wolves are more mild mannered but all 3 of my uncles are really defensive of him and are still pretty wild. They're 98% wolf, so they're pretty damn close to pure breed. Any idea what % your grandmothers are? If I had to guess I'd say theyre around 80-75% if they allow you and your family to touch them.
#35 to #32 - doctersmiles (09/07/2014) [-]
i don't know anything about percentages, but i do know she paid quite a bit for them and she calls them purebred, also all four of them are brothers.
#36 to #35 - memenoob (09/07/2014) [-]
If she's calling them purebred, they're probably 98%. Unless you live outside the US? Its illegal to own above 98% here, but most states cap it around 85% due to the Endangered Species Act. Not sure on the laws of other countries.

My friend got an arctic fox, and it literally just does dog things. Wild animals like wolves, foxes, squirrels, skunks, and even larger animals can be domesticated just fine as long is you raise them from birth, or shortly after. If you take something out of its habitat, or take it in when it's already a year old or so, it's not gonna like you very much.

No they are not. It is in a dogs Genetic code to obey and defend humans, Wolves have no such genes. Through selective breeding you could create domesticated wolves But then they would be dogs.
User avatar #63 to #60 - vicsix (09/07/2014) [-]
Anything can become a pet. Wolves are very much capable of being pets, especially since this one is so young. All animals will grow an attachment to what they grew up with as their superior/friend.

There's a reason wolves look considerably different from a lot of their selectively bred descendents, and it's because the two are different animals with different mindsets. Not by much, but in action, by plenty enough.

You can try to domesticate a wolf. You might even see some success. But at the end of the day, regardless of what you train him like, he's still, biologically, a feral animal, and there's a reason they're known as being dangerous and capricious.

Consider a Malamute instead, if you live in a cold enough climate, or a Collie or a Retriever otherwise. Unless you REALLY want a wrestling partner with four legs, then get a Mastiff.

But wolves... they_ will_ turn on you without provocation, mark my words. Unless you were sarcastic or something about all this then nevermind.
