I wouldn't really say one is harder than the other.
They both handle differently and have their own pro's and cons.

If you want hard you should play Demons Souls.

to be fair (for me) DS was simpler. Inv frames when rolling were clear and plenty, parrying the world was something easily achievable (still can't fking parry with a shield in DS2 170 hours into it, haven't needed it tho),no sou memory just soul lvl, etc. Also it doesn' t punish you as much for dying. All this together also meant it can punish you in other ways, as I still die more replaying DS than DS2 just because theres not many instakills in DS2, yeah healing is slower but you have plenty of it and you don't even need the inv frames in rolling most of the time as it's about getting far from danger not dodging it.

What I'm saying is, I love both. I preffer combat in the first one and kind of the rest (except soul memory, **** soul memory) in the second one, but DS2 is still more forgiving.

I'd say that the second in harder than the first. I've recently started a slightly modified old challenge run I did during the first.
Class challenge, pick a class and only use the starting equipment, except rings are allowed. Any infusion other than fire/lightning. No leveling, and no healing during boss fights. The main thing I've done differently is joining the covenant of champions
And I've run into problems in a couple areas. Mainly the damned Iron keep. I get two shot by the archers, and with no shield I have no real means of parrying, and my dodge is **** because of adaptability. It is by far more difficult than the first in this instance. Not to mention, without being able to join the bell covenant, getting titanite chunks is ******* impossible. There's no way I'm fighting the smelter demon with a +7 broadsword, no shield, only 8 dodge frames, and no healing
The second seems to me to be unfair in a lot more areas than the first. First is superior overall IMO.

Overall I think Dark Souls 1 is much more gimmicky than 2 was. Taurus Demon, Ceaseless Discharge, Gwyn, to name but a few are stupidly easy if you know the trick the developers hand you. It still has some solid boss fights namely: Ornstein and Smough, Artorias, and Four Kings. But honestly having played the ever-living **** out of both of them. I can confidently say that overall DS2 has many more bosses that give a true challenge and therefore satisfaction. Not to say that DS2 doesn't have it's own boss gimmicks, but the only ones I know of is poison arrows on Chariot, Pursuer ballistas, and Queen Lamia's (I forget her name) burning the windmill.

I haven't bought the DLC yet, so if someone could weigh in on if there if any of those bosses are really gimmicky. I'd be interested in hearing.
